I have a 2004 Monte Carlo SS w/ 12,000 miles. I just changed the oil maybe 1500 miles ago and for some reason I am getting a "Change the oil" light. I checked my oil, it is a good color and isn't low. My oil pressure is good. Is this some factory thing that I have to reset? Why would this light come on if my oil levels are good? It comes on when I start the car up, stays on for maybe 20 seconds and than never comes on again until I shut the car off and start it up again.

You can reset the oil light yourself it is very easy.

Turn the key to the on position do not start.
Push the gas pedal to the floor 4 times on the 4th time hold it to the floor for about 20 seconds release the pedal turn the key off.
Turn the key back on and all is clear.

Your mechanic should do this each they change the oil, if not you can do it yourself.

no kidding? Sounds like a joke. haha. But I don't know to much about these Monte's so I will give it a shot. Thank yas

No joke. I work for a rental car company and this is how you reset late model GM cars. I'ts probably something that most people do not know but this is how it's done without using a scanner.

I tried it this morning and it didn't work. I did notice that it cycled thru what seemed to be all the different code lights. Maybe I went to fast. I will try it again when I get out of work.

Don't hit the gas pedal up and down fast go slow make sure you hit the pedal four times all the way to the floor. 4th time hold it for about 20 seconds release pedal turn off key. You shouldn't have any problem

I have been doing GM rental car like this for years.

Did you get it this time??? I just reset a Colbalt and a Monte Carlo today! Same procedure.

Don't want to confuse you as the gas peddle is the most common way of reseting the light but if that dont work some require being reset thru the radio.
Try the gas pedal again first, key on engine off, press the pedal all the way to the floor 3X within 5 seconds, the change oil light should flash after the 3rd time meaning it reset, if it dont then it didnt work.
If that don't work it may have to be reset thru the radio.
Turn the radio OFF then turn the key to the ACC. postion, hold the "Tune Disp" button untill "settings" is displsyed, then press the "Seek PType or the Seek PScan" to scroll up or down thru the menu. Stop on Oil Life, press "1Prev or 2Next" for the sub menu untill RESET is dislayed, press the "Tune Disp" button to reset, you should hear a chime to verify the rest and "DONE" will be dislayed, Then scoll thru untill you reach EXIT, press " Tune Disp" again. you should hear another chime to verify the Exit.

Odds are yours resets thru the gas pedal but just in case it doesnt thats how to do it thru the radio
Good Luck!

No go on the gas pedel. It was thru the radio it had to be done. Turn the car in the "On" position. Hold down the Disp/Tune button down until you see a message that says "Settings". Use the "Scan/Seek" button to browse thru until you find "Oil Life". Than your press the "Next" or "Prev" button to find "Reset" and than you just hit the "Disp/Tune" button and it resets the oil life count. :) Found my manual, haha.

Thats how ive always done it at the dealer, never heard of the gas pedal way, i know late model trucks, and some cars, it is to the floor 3 times, or in vans it goes through the trip button.
