I think they have something to do with fuel vapors but I'm not sure if we need them or not.

Mine has been gone for years.
I don't have to pass emission checks, however, so don't know if that is an issue.

It helps vent the gas tank, you will notice a really long hose running from it going under the car.
Just unplug it and then get a fuel filter from your local parts store ( I got a Purolator ) and stick it on the end of the hose coming from the tank.
The other hose comes off your throttle body, make sure you cap it off or plug up the other end.
It makes some extra room and shaves off 2lbs.
