About time!!

If you're interested I have some pictures of the plans here: http://home.bellsouth.net/p/s/community.dll?ep=330&groupID=121728&folderview=thumbs&ck=

No, it's not bigger than the house, but it's close. I heard that once your garage is bigger than your house you become a redneck. I haven't lived in Florida that long to know what to do if that happens.

BTW, the plotplan shows the garage too close to the house. That is being changed at the moment.

James

PS, you're all invited for the lift install party once it's finished!

i think you also need to have multiple trucks & parts of old planes & army tanks, etc :p but hey, i say if you're garage is bigger than your house, you have your priorities straight! :D

Thanks for the replies! I'm going to try to keep a running cost total and updates for all that are interested in building their own garage. I want to build a 4 car garage with a lift for ~20-25k. I think it can be done.

I love the house. I've always wanted a wrap around porch. Its hard to picture the garage w/out a pic of one, but I would look into building a garage that has dormers to match the house. Like I said, the house is beautiful, and you don't want to take away from the house with a garage so big and so close to the house that doesn't match.

Thanks, the porch and the overall country feel of the house is one of the main reasons we bought it. It even has stained glass above the doorways. :)

The original garage plans had a loft above the garage w/a large dormer. I would've loved to build that, but it will not work with the ceiling height I want for a lift. Plus, it would cost more.

With that being said, I did not want something that would ruin the look of the house, and I wanted to be an asset and not a liability. So, a portion of the garage will be capable of storing a boat or an RV. That is very much in demand in my area. That, and the garage will match the house with the same color siding. I'm also adding the same over-sized windows and shutters that are on the front of the house to the garage to create symmetry. I may also add a weather-vane. :D Any turbo6 weather-vanes out there? If not, I'll have to buy the Mustang one I saw. :D

I must be a redneck:D . I just dug the footers for my gararge this past weekend. The new garage is about 2500 sq.ft.,the house is just shy of 2000 sq.ft.Were in a development of newer homes so the garage must match the house[which I think is a good idea] So parts of the new garage will have stone on it to match the house. I`m also using attick trusses so I can get a second story, that will add another 700 or so sq.ft. to it. My wife said that its going to be my new home;)

James,

What was the final tally? I'm fixing to build one too. (of course, materials are grossly overpriced right now!)

I ended up with about 35k in my garage. It doesn't have drywall, but the 2x6 construction and increased concrete cost took it over my projected cost of about 28k.

Inside before it was finished...

Damnnnnnnnnnnnnnn now thats a shop wow 4,000 sq foot wow you could store alot of broken down buicks in there lol  and mybe even have room to keep enough spare parts to keep them going lol

Garage looks very nice! Do you have your lift yet? I pick up a used Benwill 2 post for $800 last year. Had to rent a fork lift to install it, there was no way that 10 men could have lifted and stood up each of the posts.
If you haven't had a lift at your disposal before to use, you'll be amazed at how easy working on the car becomes....its almost more trouble for me to get the cars out of the garage and put the car needing to be worked on on the lift than it is to actually work on it (my lift is at the back so I have to move 2 cars out to get another car on the lift)...and then the pain to positions the arms under the car :D hehe
My garage is across the street from the house, so it didn't have to match, so I made it match the woods that surround it.. http://hometown.aol.com/onebadwskier/images/garage-outside2.jpg
FYI for those building a garage...
28x55 and a max 16' ceiling, all steel construction, did all the work myself except for the slab, slab cost about $6k, materials for everything else was around $5k.
Now with that in mind, my previous house I had a garage built that had to match the house, it was about 25x50 but only 8ft ceiling, and it cost me about $23k. But it was no where near as nice as bishir's garage looks.

Oh yeah, make sure you put an intercom system in it so you can easily communicate with the wife in the house to keep grease off the doors and door handles :) You'll be spending most of your time in the garage!

Hey Bishir, don't take this the wrong way, but living in Florida, the hurricane state, wouldn't you want some concrete block construction? I know that it costs more but I'd hate to see that beautiful garage get blown away.
