OK, so I searched and found lots of answers on this topic. Is there a link to something that shows step by step the process for checking this? I have stock ported heads and I have all kinds of valvetrain noise I want to get rid of. The block is a Grooms level 3 block but the heads are stockers.

From what i gather these are the steps to find my desired lifter preload, correct?:
1) I would remove the rocker arms on one of the heads.
2) Remove 1 of the pushrods
3) Insert the adjustable pushrod, making sure it is adjusted first to others in lgth
4) Reinstall the rockers and torque to specs.
5) Manually turn the engine until I get zero lash on the valve being checked
6) Screw out the adjustable pushrod until it can't be adjusted any further
7) Record the measurement and add .035 to it
8) Order new pushrods to that length

Sorry, not really an expert in this area...please provide input if you have it. Thanks.

You will need to place the lifter on the base circle of the cam. (opposite of the lobe) Then shorten the adj. push rod to it's shortest dimension. Install the adj. push rod and then slowly adjust it longer untill it eliminates all lash. Be VERY careful that you do not compress the lifter on mistake thinking that the lash is not gone. I have seen a few people do that and really screw up a set of valve seals. Once you have adjusted the pushrod to take up all the slop in the valvetrain, remove it and measure it and add .020"-.040". I would suggest that you do this for EACH rocker arm. Before you start, remove the rocker shafts and make sure the valve stem heights are all the same. Lay a machinists straight edge on the valve stems and verify that they are all the same. (give or take .010" or less.)If you want to have the ease of adjustable valvetrain, install roller rockers. Hope this helps.
