I just purchased an Alkycontrol kit and now I'm wondering...do I need to upgrade my TT chip for alky? I think I had Eric program it for max 18psi and NO alky. I'm running a JoeP manual boost controller, so can I just turn it up as I'm tuning the alky system or do I need to have the chip retuned beforehand? Thanks.

The best answer would likely come from Eric, don't you think?

I'm jus' sayin'........

I agree. Emailed him but haven't gotten a response yet, so I posted here

I asked this same question to Eric a few years back and his reply was that you can adjust the fueling yourself to be appropriate for the higher boost than what he has programmed in your current chip, but alky chips do have a less aggressive ramp up of timing to decrease transitional knock. There is no difference in WOT timing, if you don't want there to be one, just how it ramps up when going WOT. I did notice that transitional knock decreased when I switched chips from street to alky. That being said, my tuning skills have gotten better and Razor's kit makes it easier to tune than my SMC kit, so I recently switched to a Bailey chip that does have pretty aggressive timing ramps, and I was still able to tune away the transitional knock. I like the car on the street better too as it's more responsive. Eric's alky chips do make alky tuning simple though, but the fuel needs to be adjusted all the time for your boost and alky level, so a wideband is recommended when you start changing boost levels as you will be soon. I see you have a translator though, so maybe get an extender chip (or extreme) and then you don't need to worry about adjusting the fuel for different boost levels, just get the WOT fuel tuned right and it'll adjust itself from there.

The "street" chip you have should be fine with the alcohol kit. Fueling on a 16 lb street chip and 25 psi alcohol chip is the same. The 9 PSI difference in fuel is made up with the methanol. The timing is higher on the alky chip, altho you can put your chip into program mode and add additional timing.

Long story short.. its fine to use.. if you ever decide you want to have even more timing or tweak from there.. Eric will then have a baseline to make changes from.

Chips are like suits.. You order one online then make adjustments to it. At least this way you have a rough draft to work on. Better than no draft at all.
