Cleaning new bearings with scotchbrite and oil ????

In a Merkel "Power Buick" rebuild article they mention cleaning new bearings with scotchbrite pad and clean oil . What is the reason behind this and how is it done ????? thanks.

ooooohhhh....

Sounds dangerous to me. Personally I wouldn't. The bearing material is pretty soft.

But...what do I know?!?!?

I took one of those blue shop paper towels with clean oil and the new bearing polished right up . Then I sprayed it down with brake cleaner . Paper towel was very dirty when I was finished . and bearing looks nice . Most likely a little bit better then useing a scotchbrite pad.
