Clicking noise coming from crank sensor?

Got under the car today and heard a clicking noise that sounded like it was coming from the vicinity of the crank sensor. If the interuptor rings are hitting the crank sensor could it cause the missing and knock retard that I'm getting at high rpm's? The missing gets worse the warmer it gets. Thanks, R.B.
 
Replace the sensor because it is about to leave you stranded when it breaks totally. Car will die instantly. Been there

Rather than replacing it right away (since it's obviously working), just adjust it so it's not hitting the interupter rings.
You need to get under there and turn the crank by hand until you find out what's hitting, then loosen the holding screw (1 long one) just enough to allow adjustment of the sensor.
This takes some time and patience, as you have to rotate the crank completely (by hand) to make sure it's not touching any of the rings.
 
OK, adjusted the crank sensor. No more clicking. Took it out for a few wot passes. Here's whats happening. First pass 3.7 knock retard right before the shift to third gear and o2's dropped to 750 at 80mph. Second pass pretty much the same except 02's dropped to 730 at 80mph. THEN IT HAPPENED! Right before the shift into third gear I got severe missing, hesitation or whatever you want to call it. Knock retard on Scanmaster showed 16.9 and the 02's were 573!!!! Fuel pressure does go up with boost. 42psi static and 14lbs of boost = 56lbs total. Casper's thumbwheel chip set on the stock setting. 93 octane fuel with redstripe injectors. Why the huge drop in 02's? Could the afpr be messing up? Need help, please! Thanks, R.B.
 
Hows the 2-3 shift on the tranny? Could be slipping, allowing the car to over rev. Do you have a tach? My car did a similar thing when the tranny went south, but I didn't get any knock retard.
 
The car shifts fine. On the way home a few minutes ago I got on it pretty good in second gear and it felt like you turned the key off for a split second and a red light flashed somewhere on the right hand side of the instrument panel. It was so fast I couldn't tell which one it was. Maybe something is hitting under boost. I had the drivers side motor mount repaced a couple of months ago. Guess I better replace the passenger side, huh. If that doesn't work I will try a tie down strap. I know, I know, poly mounts. Thanks, R.B.
 
I just broke the accessory bracket which, from what I hear, is unique to our cars. I'm not using a torque strap anymore.:mad:
 
I had this happen a few years back.The crank was hitting the crank sensor under boost.The cause....main bearings where toast.The car would run fine until you started leaning on it and then it would pop and miss,show massive knock retard etc.
 
So it ran o.k. till the third pass right. If so I would try a harmonic balancer and new crank sensor. If the balancer gets in to the sensor again then it is rebuild time as mentioned in above reply.I told my dad to mention that I would try the above mentioned the day after you had picked up your car. I think the parts came to $180. I can check and get them for you at a discounted rate if you want.
 
Just had new bearings replaced about 4 months ago. BTW, the tie down strap didn't help either.
 
Sounds like you hit the rev limiter. What kind of chip? My car did the exact same thing, and the light was the check engine light, used by many chip burners as a shift lite, or to let you know it hit the limiter.
 
Punched it in first gear a few minutes ago and got a muffled pop from under the hood. Check engine light came on along with a code 42. Unplugged the orange wire and the code didn't come back. Can this est problem have something to do with the way my car has been running? What do I check first for the code 42? I'm really tired of this s#%^#!!!! Thanks, R.B.

CODE 42

Trouble Code 42 indicates that there may be a malfunction in the Electronic Spark Timing (EST) system.

During cranking, the timing is controlled by the ignition module while the ECM monitors the engine speed. When the engine speed exceeds 400 RPM, the ECM sends a BYPASS signal to the ignition module which switches the timing to ECM control. The ECM calculates what the timing should be then "tells" the ignition module via the EST circuit.

An open or ground in the EST circuit will stall the engine and set a Code 42. The engine can be re-started but it will run on ignition module timing.

The conditions for setting this code are:

System in BYPASS mode but the ignition module is still controlling timing

- or -
Engine speed > 600 RPM with no EST pulses (ECM controlled timing) going to the ignition module for 200 msec.



Typical causes for this code include:

1) BYPASS line is open or grounded
2) EST line is open or grounded
3) PROM or CALPACK not seated properly in the ECM
4) Poor connections between ignition module and ECM
5) Poor routing of EST harness and/or poor quality ignition wires (EMI induced electrical noise)
6) Faulty or incorrect ignition module
7) Faulty ECM
 
Since you had a crank sensor problem, I would remove the belt and see if the balancer will rotate or move on the crank.
 
Geting more confused by the minute! What does the crank sensor and harmonic balancer have to do with a code 42???
 
Maybe nothing, but the crank sensor "is" where the thread started.

I'll check my schematics and see if it can affect the EST circuit indirectly.

The short answer is I believe yes.

It looks like the crank sensor wires go directly to the ignition module. This is also where the cam sensor and EST Bypass switch is located. (Inside the module I presume.) If the crank sensor were shorting out and sending spikes to the CCCI Module maybe this could trip the code 42 you got. If you can eliminate the crank sensor and all the rotating parts involved, it would be a good place to start. Your other choices involve following wires and looking for shorts in the EST system. (Not my favorite thing to do.)

Anyone can certainly jump in and tell me I'm barking up the wrong tree. Just trying to help.
