I'm getting a code 24 on my 86 GN after doing a GNX dash conversion. I know it is throwing a code because the stock VSS converter box (green) is no longer in the circuit. I get my MPH signal on the electronic VDO speedo through a standalone VSS that plugs into the factory lower speedo cable going to the trans. The ECM is not seeing a MPH signal. Will this cause any problems other than probably not allowing the TCC to lockup? I just drove the car around town and it seemed fine. Can you make this code stay off with chip programming?

ECM needs to see vss for timing/fuel adjustments in upper gears with most chips.

Really??? I honestly thought the MPH signal was only used for TCC lockup and had nothing to do with the fuel/timing arrangements?

Most chips I know of go off the gear indicators in the tranny not the VSS...But I have been told that extended cruising with the lock up not working can destroy the tranny, something to do with where the fluid goes in the higher gears...That's why the tranny has to moddied for use with a non-lockup converter.

maybe you can splice the output from that VSS into the stock VSS wiring. if the box you have puts out a signal that's compatible with the stock ecm, that should do it.
i think that's how it was done on the GNX.

Don I just got done doing a GNX dash conversion myself.

I used a Caspers VSS converter and autometer. If I can help you with anything shoot me an E-mail to GNS@charter.net

If it's a TT chip, you'll need to fix that, or I need to reprogram the chip. Don't even go WOT until it's fixed. The VSS is an important sensor for my chips and the special features it has. With the stock chip, or other chips based on the stock chip, it doesn't matter so much, except for TCC lockup and a few small things.

Eric

+1 on the lockup. You will damage the trans if it's a LUP tranny that can't lock.

Hi,
Due to a converter malfunction, I drove for two years without lockup. It did not cause trans failure. I put a replacement in there, and that was that.
Here's the caveat; The guys who wrote the original warning were probably thinking of worst case scenarios, with heavy torque loads above the rating for our poor transmissions. I didn't beat mine too hard.

I drove my 87 a long time ago without lockup for several years and never had a trans failure as well. That's why I didn't think it was a big deal. But I'm not going against those who said it will cause failure because I'm sure not having proper lockup is not a good thing over time. There's only one wire I need to tap off the stock VSS to the new VSS to get the signal going...so no biggie.

i have a gnx dash im my car and i called speedometer service and they sent me a vss that hooks inline on the transmission cable that solved my problems.Plus its only one unit compared to the two you need from casper.heres their number (414) 463-6660 talk to roger

I am experiencing this same problem right now... I have a GNX dash by (Bent6) and used the stand alone VSS like you did and I am getting the same code 24.... What did you end up doing to solve this issue?

.

Scot, I ran 2 "signal" wires off of my dead end sender as per another users set up (I'll see if I can find the thread). 1 to the speedo and 1 to the VSS converter then to the brown wire from the original green VSS box. Everything works fine now but my 1st VSS converter was bad. If the speedo worked now only the ECM doesn't have a signal I would start there, if there is no signal to the speedo or ECM, I'd say check the signal wire.

Guys, I am running a AVC GNX dash setup with upgraded VDO vision Speedo, and tach.....
I used the orig VSS, mounted in an old Speedo head, installed in a small can for protection..If my memory is correct I tapped into the brown wire on the orig green VSS buffer module, and it works perfectly...the VDO 333-155 tach needs the Caspers VDO tach module to run off the stock white wire in the factory tach harness...very simple and cheap setup......

Moich fun with GNX style dash....When i changed mine out ,the VDO Speedo wouldn't work on the stock speedo cable, i called Jegs an got the "VDO speedo cable sensor",problem solved...I calibrate it on the HWY with mile markers.
(But i run XFI,an Non-Lock up unit an convertor)

Enjoy!

My speedometer still works but sometimes the needle "Bounces"..

I have a Non Lock-up converter so I don't have to worry about lock up..

I removed the stock "Green" VSS from under the dash.. But I never ran any extra wires when hooking up my VSS sensor to the trans....

So from this reading I gather that the code 24 causes the ECM to adjust fuel & timing because of it??

I need to solve this before the car hit the road here next week... I can also take pictures if need be so others know what they are looking at....Any help to solve my code 24 will be very appreciated.

Bouncing speedo sounds like the signal is being interrupted. Check the entire source from the tranny and I'll bet something came loose, dead end sender, somewhere the signal wire got nicked and could be grounding out, ect.
What did you use to send the signal to the ECM (brown wire on stock green VSS box)?

Anyone running the Poston Dash? My car had one installed with the electronic VDO speedo and it doesn't register and was throwing a 24 code. When I swapped in the new motor, Eric set up my chip knowing my speedo didn't work so LU and speed adjusted timing was disabled. I have no idea if everything is there but needs to be "programmed" or if i need the caspers converter box. Lower speedo cable goes to a VDO dead end sender near the wiper motor then 2 wires go from that through the firewall into the dash. Where would I look to find the factory VSS (green box)? The strange thing is when I first drove the car after finishing the motor swap, the scanmaster was displaying mph which meant the computer was getting a signal. After a few miles it stopped displaying mph and hasn't since. Also my rebuild trans burnt up after 60 miles. Having a new trans built now but this needs to be fixed asap. Any ideas?
