Coil pack

I heard that if your coilpack/module were going bad there's no in between, is there? I replaced my 2 year old plugs and wires(I had no I dead it had been that long!) trying to get the missing to stop, the plugs cut it in half, but the wires did nothing. I'm pretty sure its still ignition related because when I power brake it it get pretty mad and it gets worse the hotter it is outside.

You heard wrong. Most obvious problem would be running fine in normal driving but as soon as you go half pedal or WOT, it starts popping and missing. Borrow a known good unit and try it out on YOUR car.

ok, I checked the prices of the coil pack and module over at kirbans',
-first- where should I buy them from for most bang for buck?
-second- can I replace the coil pack/module w/o other, or should you replace them at the same time so say, you dont burn out a new peice by mixing it with an old peice?

Hi,
I would just replace the coil pack at first. Modules seem pretty durable in my experience.You have cruise misfire? Sounds like an extreme case. Just for kicks, do a tower resistance test, and look for discrepancies between them. I think the spec is around 12K ohms. Good luck!

I checked them around christmas time(back when this had started) and they were 11.8.

I just finneshed a rebuild and replaced the coil with a wells coil. I am having the common problem too. I think I have heard that they suck and can be bad out of the box. Is that true, should I buy an ac or caspers? or whoever makes a good coil.

Yes there is an inbetween on coils. As they start to go bad internal resistance goes up typically which in turn lowers output voltage to your plugs. This lower voltage can actually not be enough to fire under high compression from boost or a rich fuel condition, hence the high voltage upgrade ignition many go to on boosted vehicles.

I just replaced my coil with an AC Delco unit. I heard that some of the other ones weren't all that reliable. I got it from Aggressive performance ( they were having a sale) it was $70.00 with shipping. It also has a 1 yr. warranty. You can find them at Bennett auto supply & I beleive Advanced auto. They are about $110.00.

Advance can order the Delco units but there more expensive than Kirbans. Do yourself a favor and avoid the AutoZone (wells) units. I tried three new one's and all of them caused missfires when they got hot.

I second that- the Wells units get hot and go to $hIt. They have caused me some real headaches. They are tempting cause they are cheaper- but don't!!!!

A brand new delco out of the box has a miss, so they are not fool proof either

well, Chris and I got out there and jsut messed with it trying his pack and what-not, and magicly it started working again-I think the connector that plugs into the module was dirty or jsut wasnt sitting right or something, even though I have pulled it off and messed w/ it before and it didnt change anything.
