You asked for likes and dislikes. Here are ours:

Likes: We have had DishNetwork for over 4 years with few reception problems... unless a big thunderstorm is in the area. Cost is super reasonable and the picture quality is great. You can bundle it with AT&T cel phones, DSL, land line phone service and long distance plans for a good savings.

Dislikes: A gripe is at about 3 AM, a stupid Dish Network screensaver appears and stays on until the next time you turn your TV on. A real problem if you want to record a program with Tivo or a VCR during that time. If you unplug the phone line to try to get around that, you'll get a threat to charge you an additional fee. I think they are probably selling your personal info. somehow or why would they care.

Wierdness factor: In the AM, when I turn the TV on, I've noticed the channel is switched to one of those phony TV preacher religious channels so that's weird for sure. The installer and service folks also seemed amateurish... almost kind of sketchy... not uniformed, they work for a company called Echostar and complained about the company and they were required to use their own vehicles which were real beaters.

It is not available in my area now, but as soon as it is, we plan on swtching to the AT&T Uverse.

We have Verizon phone, internet and Direct TV (4 boxes) for $160 mo. The only dislike if it snows real bad or thunderstorm reception is weak or non existent.

i'm sure alot has changed but do you have a clear line of sight to the sat? if you don't know check around your neighborhood. signal falls like rain so consider that and look around and you'll get an idea of how it needs to be pointed and what direction. if you don't then you'll have to pole mount it in a clearing and bury the cable which costs. they have the plug in your box do do ads, make sure your not pirating their signal with a dish box but then you don't need a dish box to do that, there are plenty of other manufactors who'll sell you one that will for a price. Also helps them back then figure out how many boxes your running and other stuff they keep track of. not sure if they're selling it, then again i was a grunt back then. find out what services are available in your area and find out their offers. some cable companies gave rebates when you turned in your dish. so you could go to the flea market and buy a dish LNB and receiver and make some cash on it if you go that route. just inquire and ask charter did in our area. just a few things i can think of before for you to think about.

I've had a little of each:
Dish, Direct TV, and Cox Cable as well as TIme Warner Cable.

First of all Cable sucks. Service was weak and picture terrible.

Second of all Dish sucks too. Why? Because when I had it every bill would be different even though i was supposed to be on a set monthly plan. Then when I'd call I'd get some guy in India or Pakistan named Biff who could barely understand me and never had an answer.

Direct TV had a few rough starts with me but every time I call I get an engish speaking person (I assume american) and they've always handled any issue I had. Oh, and the picture ain't half bad either...;)

I've been trying to persuade them to let me have service ala carte so that I'd only pay for what I want as opposed to 300 channels of crap no one wants to see... One of these days...
