Why are the cometic head gaskets water passages smaller then the openings on the heads? It would seem like you would want them to flow as much as possable?

you will find that on a majority of head gaskets. Even oem parts are that way. I dont have a 100% definate answer for you but i would assume its to slow water down kinda like the t stat does. I used felpro 1000 they seem to be perfect.

Called cometics they said that the reason for the smaller water passages on the head gasket is that GM used the gasket to restrict the water flow and raise the pressure to properly cool the motor.
