I am not a computer wizz so I might not be able to describe the details all that professionally!!! Basically, my computer would have problems while I was using Windows. I would be at a website and click on something. Well, done looking at that so I X out of it. The screen I X'ed out of wouldn't completely clear out, especially at the top of the screen. So I browse on the page but I can't push the BACK button or do anything. Basically I have the Cntrl-Alt-Delete and End prgrams in order to get the screen off. Then I start all over again and it pops up with WinFixer which I know is a virus. I x out of that and it comes up with 3 other WinFixer pages and I can't get to my original page. Then it says that Windows had a prblem and needs to close down. So I start all over again and the same thing happens over and over. I installed Nortons Anti Virus and it said its not compatible with MacFee Security. The Nortons says everything is working properly. What is the problem? What can I do? Thanks for any help!! ----Jeremy

You most likely have a trojan virus. Your going to need to deep scan the hdd with a good virus program to remove it. Hopefully that will do it. If not, you may need to do a new windows install.

Once you get things cleared up, I would rid yourself of Mc"anything" or Norton"whatever".

For right now, you may have trouble doing any of these things but you can try:

Install Firefox OR Mozilla browser. Leave off "fun and cool" stuff - like flash player plugins, audio plugins etc. Use this browser for your Porn.

http://www.trendmicro.com/spyware-scan/ or http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Some viri or wormy evil things out there will prevent you from browsing to AntiVirus websites. You might get lucky by trying them all till you get one. Most major AV companies have a free online scan. Further, even if you can get Firefox installed some of these sights might only work with IE. Nearly definite for windows updates (which should be done too).

Anywhoo heres more stuff. These actually require a typical install but dont require your browser to manage. Might be easier to have a buddy download and put on CD for you. You likely dont need them ALL and on clean machines I would stick to just one and keep it updated.

My favorite personal use AntVi program: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

Microsoft waited til someone wrote a reasonable antispyware program, then purchased it: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Spybot - a longtime favorite by many: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Thats enough for a start eh? Lots of other things you can do without software but the above tools will (if they fix anything) automate some of the process.

Lastly, do a search on this forum as its been covered before - and better!

I'm going to to try some of those websites real quick! I'll keep ya updated!! Thanks for the help guys!! -----Jeremy

gotta get winfixer out of there..do a google under winfixer, just dont go to the winfixer.com site, for removal help...and temporarily turn off system restore and then boot up in safe mode and run your scans ...HTH

Lots of good info here on how to protect and rid yourself of malware. I just got hit with something similar, a fake antivirusware that helped itself to my computer without my permission. When I got rid of it, I lost parts of my Norton firewall and antispyware. Ended up having to rebuild the OS.

Well, I did everything that GNandGS said and seemed to be working great!! Only problem is that I did a search on Google for winfixwer and clicked on a site that was supposed to remove it. BAD IDEA!!! Must have been a fake site because Winfixer just attacked my computer. So I re-ran all of the other programs and we'll see what happens! Anybody else have any issues with Winfixer? What did you do to fix it? Thanks ----Jeremy

Sounds like they have it set so if you click on the site your agreeing to download it with out being prompted. Sucks!

OK, I think I have it all squared away now. I did everything over again and my dad told me to take all of the Yahoo stuff of the computer. There was like 8 different yahoo programs I had to un-install. Now the computer is extremely fast and I'm not getting any pop-ups! That trendmicro.com seemed to have taken the WinFixer vius out too!! Thanks for the help guys!! ----Jeremy

i know this is an old one but i wanted to pass along that there is a new "version" of the winfixer bug. i can't remember the name of it, one of our old computers got it, its win something. wincure maybe, i'm not sure. same thing, new name. when my old computer caught the winfixer i had the exact same problem you described but the good news is it only happened in Internet explorer. so running msn explorer, aol explorer, firefox (i'll never use anything but firefox again) all got around the bug. I never tried removing IE, i'm not even sure if windows will let you. but i'd be willing to bet thats where it embeds its self. and there is no anti virus thing out there that will remove it that i could find. its a nasty little bastard.

for those of you stil using IE do yourself a huge favor and get firefox. its almost as good as using an apple. (reliable as can be)

I had winfixer 2005. POS. Finally got that crap out of here.

Ended up buying two apple computers.

They work like a champ.
