Hey 6sense congrats on breaking into the 12's. What changes did you make to get you over the edge, I see you 60' time came way down and even with that you could have gotten there, but that's a great increase in trap speed also. Think you have the formula to run consistant 12's now. I'm hoping to get there soon also with some drag radials and better 60's I'm currently running 13.30's @ 104mph, wich is enough trap spped to get at least high 12's but I'm running 2.2 60's on street tires. Can't leave with much boost without blowing the tires away. Anyway great times!!!

Thanks

Basically all I did was go with my gut feeling and swapped out the stock cam with the 204/214 that was sitting in my other block.
With the ported intake and my playing around with the heads I felt that the engine had to be able to pump some air. As I turned boost up I would basically always hit a wall. Only thing I could think of was that the stock cam in this original block [from my brother's old hotair car; first TR we ever had] was not letting the valves open enough to let all that air flow. To sum it up: a mismatched combo.

First time out with the cam was Sept 21 and there was a noticeable difference. Highest mph was 103.99 which bettered my previous best of I think 102.8. 60fts stunk and best et was 13.6. Had big popping problem and wheel spin as I was getting the car to go faster throughout the night.
Changes after that night, before Oct 5th when I ran times in sig, were (1) gap the plugs down to about .031 (from .034), (2) fix pass header leak developed after last time at track (leaks make car sluggish, throws off fueling, more prone to kr), (3) raise the turn on point of alky (I felt popping was from too rich on bottom end), (4) run in "D" and not "OD". I felt car shifting into 4th during runs! (5) try using my [bought used] almost completely bald BFG DRs that never seemed to help one bit in the past [figured it couldnt hurt].

First run right off the street with no changes was a 13.0 @ 103.94 (previous best et was 13.30). I new it would be a good night. After the Cardinals pounded the Dodgers earlier, the whole day would be great :D
The cam helped to free up the combo, but if there is a lesson here it should be what I know everyone has heard before: tuning is more important than anything. I have not spent any money on this drivetrain in a couple years as far as performance enhancing parts. My labor playing around with adjustments here and there and trying different things is what has made the biggest difference. I dont want people to get in that state of mind to just throw parts at their cars (like cams) and voila' it will go twice as fast. My combo was really out of whack with the cam that was in it, almost as if it had a wiped cam that wasnt opening valves like they should for the air that was there. Get your individual combo right, make sure headers/crossover/uppipe are sealed, and TUNE. Oh yeah if there is anything Ive learned from drag racing over the last few years its that if you dont improve your short time you are wasting your time worrying about et. Example: last two runs of night - 13.23@105.27 (2.076 60ft), then the time in sig. Same mph but left with more boost. I had spin and wheel hop on that 12.8 run but it still was an improvement (hmm, what if there was no spin).
Last years feat was tackle 13s, this year I wanted 12s. Our track closes this month so I might go back this week for more if can afford to. Not satisfied yet...need..more..speed...;)

Oops, didnt mean to post such a big post. You got me started.

:)

P.S. Sometime Ive got to try a different chip! Eric Marshal (Turbotweak) doesnt make chips for 37# injectors does he?

I feel your pain I have'nt spent anymore money on the car either, Yet! I basically have the same as you did bolt on's stock long block w/ lunati cam, ta49, no alky. And since this was my first Turbo buick when I built this motor I didn't even replace the stock valve springs. Still pulls good though and I believe I can break into the 12's with a set of drag radials, like I said I have the trap speed (104mph) just gotta get below the 2.0 60ft. I'm really more excited about my 85 T that I have had for some time but can never seem to keep 2 Turbo Buicks going at the same time (have to borrow parts off one to keep the other running). Anyway this one has all the good stuff, 204-214 cam, port matched heads & intake, 3" downpipe, do it yourself alky kit and soon a larger compressor intercolled Ta49 w/.82 A.R. exhaust housing. I currently have 868 injectors in this one but was told by John Craig @ limit that with the free flowing turbine housing I need larger injectors. Anyway the last time I took this one to the track before I had alky I could run 13.40's-50's easy. Even with a bad transmission. I am very excited about this car cause it pulls like a mother up top. It's down for now but will be resurrected in time for the Turbo Buick weekend @ Silver Dollar Raceway Nov 5 & 6. Going to kick some intercooled arse***. Maybe not many but some will be suprised. And again sorry for such a long post. P.S. 6Sense was that on pure pump gas and alky?

chip

6SENSE, congrats on those great times, and yes, eric marshall should be able to burn you a chip for those 37's, he burnt one for me this summer and those are the injectors i have

mike

Thanks Mike. I'll have to contact Eric when I get some money. One of his alky chips should make things interesting;)

boostmaster, forgot to mention that. The car has never seen anything higher than 93 octane. Never bolted up a set of slicks either. I always liked the idea of making the car as fast as I could in street trim. Maybe when I get to a certain point it might be cool to see what would happen with a set of slicks. Heck even a new [good] set of DRs would be cool to try. The ones that I have are in such bad shape that I only bolt them on when Im going to go to the track. Sometimes I dont even bother with them since they never made a difference over racing on my Khumo radials. That last night with the DRs on I was able to get the 60fts down a couple tenths but I think it may have been the better state of tune the car was in more than anything else.

6Sense what kind of boost are you able to obtain on 93 octane and alky? Are you still running the single stage set up with the nozzle in the turbo adapter? Lastly those times are even more impressive knowing that they were run on pump gas. But along with your cam I think your engine is getting a big benifit from your higher flowing intake.

Thanks all:o

boostmaster, Ive successfully run 24psi with this ta33. By successfully I mean efficiently with a gain, not just heating up the air like I was doing when the smaller cam was in there and turning boost up. I am not really having any KR problems so I will be turning it up some more. I spoke to someone at Limit awhile back about the efficiency of the ta33 at high boost and they felt that it would have no problems running it in the high 20s. Turbo should be able to handle high 11s, I think.
I think I will eventually hit a wall in performance with this turbo (but what do I know). With a bigger turbo wont have to run as much boost, but we already discussed the turbo availability problem a month or so ago in another thread.
Nozzle location is same Ive always run since late 90s when I first tinkered with it. However I dropped the NOS fanspray nozzle roughly a year ago and went to a mcmaster m15. Single nozzle in the turbo adaptor. Got the m15 through Razor.

larger cam.....good:) Next time even bigger:D
