As soon as my car shifts into second gear my torque converter locks up. If I apply the brakes it unlocks. I would think that if the TCC solenoid was bad that it would not unlock. Could this be the problem?

do you have a switch that you are not aware of? a convertor will engage in second gear if it is done manually with a switch. if a switch is locked and as soon as it shifts in second it will engage because there is no fluid transfer in first gear to the convertor

No I don't have a lock up switch.. I was thinking I may have a short. Would that cause it to lock up.

Pull the connector off the side of the trans and do a continuity check to ground on the tan/blk wire (pin "D") and pin "D" on the trans connector. If you show a ground on the tan/blk wire, the short is in the harness. If you show a ground on the trans connector the short is inside the trans. Either the solenoid itself is shorted or the wiring harness inside the trans is shorted.

Thanks for all the help. I will be giving this a shot later on today. I'll let you guys know what I find.

Thank you for all of your help. I found the problem, it was the TCC solenoid. There was a bare spot on the insulation for one of the wires causing it to ground out.

i have the same damn problem. just got the car running with the new motor and it is doing this. only thing i have done is put a new pan on the trans. this sucks.

ok im trying to figure mine out. i dont want to drop the pan unless i know damn well in side of its the problem. i see the male connector how do i pin it to find out if theres a problem? can i use a test light. if i use a test light on the female side it lights up on every connector and one of them makes a clicking sound. as far as the male side i can get back to you on that.

I see you found this thread. You can disregard my suggestion in my reply to your thread!

What was said above, and what I was alluding to in my reply to your post, is that the solenoid is getting a ground from somewhere in order to operate. So the problem is either in the harness that runs from the connector at the trans to the ECM or inside the trans. You can use a volt meter to check both sides. If you check pin D on the trans and find it's grounded to the case then the problem is inside.
