converter shimming

Putting another converter in and if it needs shimmed, how much distance between shims and flexplate is a good safe zone?? Thanks in advance!

Thanks alot for the info Firechicken. Didn't realize it had been that long since I installed one and had BRAIN FADE....It happens with age they tell me!!
