I need advice on what fans are available which can easily be bolted on to my 85 Hot Air. I have the 87ECM as well as the F-body radiator. I need a fan that can be mounted and I will probably need a new radiator hold down plate as well. I will also have to run a wire to the ECM. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Brad

When I did my 85 GN with 87 'puter, I used the computer to ground a 30 amp relay that I mounted by the horns on the inner left fender. Power from battery to #30 on relay to 87 fan thru 10g wire. Power for relay from fuse block to relay thru 14g wire. I also installed a toggle switch on the ground side so I could turn it on when I wanted to. Hope this helps.

I can certainly tell you what to stay away from, the racetronics dual harness is pretty much usless for us....Tell you what your best bet is an 87 electric fan...should get you down to 180 or so. As I mentioned to you I have the flex-a-lite 220 dual fans, got em at jeg's. They fit nicely and you can use the "through the radiaor mounts" which makes it a really easy mount. Yhey also pull about 20 or so amps so they will run fine on one relay. I am a stubborn son-of-a-***** who just isn't satisfied with those nylon bolts so I manufactured a way to bolt them down. But you would be able to keep you existing radiator hold down and those keep me at 160-165 no matter what. I do however run mine whenever the engine is running.

I have yet to find a good thermostatic temp controller, been through 3 that were either misswired or just didn't work. I have the one for the flex-a-lite fans on "backorder" from jegs and frankly wiring it to the ECM is just to much of a pain in the rear for me. I'm pretty sure the pin is D2 for fan control. Of course since you have the caspers conversion and the 85 harness you don't have a connector for the fan, hence why the racetronics harness is usless for us. I have the 87 harness but for the life of me I can't find where the fan connects, so much for plug and play. Also D2 on the ECM does not have a pin.

I really what to control my turn on points via the temp of the radiator core, that is if I ever get a controller that actually works.

i've got a 16" Hayden electric fan with a 3 core radiator and top plate out of an 82-ish Cutlass.
the radiator and top plate bolted right in, and i got an upper hose for an 87 GN. it keeps the temp down right at the 180 level that the thermostat is rated at, evne when it's 100 degrees outside.
for now, i have a used fan relay out of some FWD car i parted out a long time ago wired to a toggle switch under the dash that is hooked to a "run" terminal on the fuse box, but i did get a Hayden thermostatic fan switch from Mills Fleet Farm (you probably don't have one of those stores near you unless you are in MN or WI- but that store kicks ASS) for $16.95 that uses a temp probe that goes into the radiator core by the upper hose to turn it on, but i have yet to hook it up. it looks like a quality piece- the relay and connectors all say "Germany" on them, and the wiring seems plenty stout. just need to get it hooked up and functional.

Yea thats what I thought with those thermostatic controls, I have bought 2 so far and have one on backorder.....I finally just got tired of the whole thing and wired my fans to the battery and ignition switch so it turns on when I key the ignition.

He has an F-body radiator so there is no need to change that...

Go to the boneyard and get yourself a fan unit from any GM V-8 car ( 90 and up)...they are a dual unit that comes in a shroud that fits the G-bodys well. I had to rotate the fans 180 degrees on the shroud so the wiring would come out the bottom and it set well against the rad and core support....good luck

which GM V8 cars are you talking about?
the only 90-up GM cars that had electric fans were Camaros and Firebirds- which would be the easiest way to go, but that stuff gets picked off right away around here- Corvette, and the 94-96 B body cars (Caprice/Impala/Roadmaster/Delta 88). but the B body fans are mounted directly to the radiator and don't really have a one piece shround- and the radiator on those cars is WIDE, so i don't think both fans could be made to fit in a Regal.

I'm running the dual fan setup with the F-bod radiator and couldn't be more happy with it. Even with a front mount my temps don't get above 175 in the 100 degree heat and if I drive easy it will actually cool back down to ~160.

I have the primary fan come on with the fuel pump because I want air to blow across the headers on the passenger side at all times the engine is running. The secondary is triggered by an adjustable thermostat set at 165 degrees. It also uses the ignition as a primary trigger before the thermostat so it won't stay on with engine warm and key off. I've installed an override switch also so I can run the secondary fan all the time if I want.

This thing cools good enough that even in the summer time with the car idling, the secondary fan cycles on and off.

I know that I will need and 80's Cutlass V-8 radiator hold down plate. I had to cut one down in order to hold down the F-Body radiator on the drivers side. I also believe that my fan shroud is also the radiator hold down plate.

I am trying to keep this simle. Postons sells a fan as well as a switch to control the fan-always on low, computer controlled, always on high. Does anybody know what they are selling? It is supposed to be for 84-87 cars. I am running a 160 thermostat and want to stay 180 or below in traffic and it is 95 degrees outside. Thanks- Brad

My fans came off a Roadmaster, fits perfect

autozone has a fan control (electric) and fan mounts that i used on my car it has a veriable temp setting so u can set it to turn on when u want it on and i used there fan mounts and wired up 2 fans from a dodge neon!!

Jay

i work 2morrow so i will get the part number and name for you for both the control and fan mounts

Jay

brad

part #900210 is the fan tie kit
part #733653 is the adjustable fan controler for the electric fan
these are stock at most AZ anywhere. if anymore ?'s let me know
appreciate your help with alternator wiring thanx again
Jay

HOT85- Thanks for the part numbers. Picked it up today. Where is P Town IL?Send a PM. I hope I helped with the Alt. wiring. Any questions-Please post or PM. Brad

that fan mounting ties didnt come with tension springs...i can pot some pics of my elect. fan setup

Bot- Any pic would be great. What I am doing is installing an 87 fan on a 85 hot air. I have the correct wiring harness for an 84/85 which has an 87 ECM. The part 85hot and I are talking about is a simple zip tie setup which holds the fan to the AC condenser. I will evaluate if this will work when I get the fan a remove the old one. Brad

I'll post some pics in a min. I need some pics of that ac setup to if you ca
i'll post on here

brad some fan pics and that spring set up upper right corner
