I was wondering if anyone has an idea as to why
the third main in my motor is wiped?
The rest of the bearings are mint.
Also if my crank is already cut 0.020 can i still use this
crank if i polish it.
buicks always bearings and head gaskets!!!!!!

Thanks for any suggestions!

Funny you should ask. I was at Merkel Engines Saturday and he said if the line-bore wasn't done with the heads torqued on it will take out the #3 main bearing. Was your block line-bored?

Intercooler, that is good info.I am glad I got mine done that way.
John, If you have already gone .020 then wiped a bearing I would be surprised if the crank would still be saveable with a polish.

Jesse i believe jack but i had my block lined bored with out the heads on and my bearings looked fine when i pulled my motor. Busted that piston instead of a whiped bearing.

I just had my 3.8 done with steel caps and without the heads on it. After talking with him (first time I ever spoke to the guy and face to face) he had me thinking. I am going by my machine shop tomorrow and have him torque the heads on to see if the #3 main goes out of round. Damn I hope not! From what Jack Merkel said only his shop and one other on the East Coast is set up to do a line-bore with the heads on. That leaves me real:confused: about how everyone else is getting by. After hearing this it make me not want to put caps on my 4.1 and line-bore it:eek:

Ther are at least 3 or 4 shops up here in Ma. area that line bores with the heads on.
#3 bearing is that the thrust bearing and have you checked your converter if it is.

Im not sure if it was done with the heads on or off!
The motor has about 3 summer season's off boost!!!!!!!
is there anything else you guy's think it could be.
would detonation be a cause, or is the crank warped?

I know of a shop in Bryan tx. that does this too. I am sure there is a lot more.

This is starting to scare me im having my motor built right now and getting steel caps installed and it has already been line bored but the heads werent torqued on please some body tell me if it absolutley necessary thanks
