What would be the source of fine, copper particles in the pan/fluid?

This is a long shot...

Would you expect to see a lot in first 1000 miles of a fresh rebuild?
 
Not a whole lot when things are lubed and not started up dry. I know that when you fire up the engine and the torque converter starts pumping the fluid, the lube circuits are supplied, but I have seen transmissions that weren't "assembly lubed" produce a lot of brass.
