What should I pay to have a shop install a Eaton posi unit in my peg leg 87T?
I've never had any work like this done so I am not even sure how long it takes to set up.

Thanks,

I'll take a guess. I've never had it done so it's only a guess though.

I would say with the cost of parts (carrier, bearing/seal kit) and labor it would be around $800-$1000. More if you need a new gear set.

I've picked a couple units off of this site. A new 30 spline for $400 and a 28 for a little less. I also bought a used one for an 84 I had for about $200. I had a local guy install it for $150; after he got off of work.

Local guy charged $100 to but in my Eaton. Bought it from DTS they are in most hot rod mags. Ended up that they where from MI. So I drove up and picked it up. No shipping. Got lucky there I guess. I think it was aroun $500.

I used to charge about 4 hours labor to install one including axle bearings and seals. More if new gears. The beauty of 10 bolts is that most of the time if good parts were used there was minimal shimming. My labor rate before I got out of the business was 75 an hour but I was in the D/C suburbs so it was higher than other places. People charge around 80 to 85 now at smaller shops. Dealers are at around 100 and hour:eek:

GNTIM,

Thanks. Your labor time is exactly what a shop here in Albuquerque told me. At least I know they are not out of line in there estimate, plus they will warranty their work.

I have a Powertrax unit for sale. You can install it yourself since the gears are NOT disturbed. $250 shipped to lower 48 states. It has about 1,500 miles on it.

Thanks, it's tempting but I am going with an Eaton unit. Good luck with the sale.

How do you like the Powertraxx locker? I have one in my 2005 Chevy Silverado. I have a new 30 spline kit for sale too if anybody is interested.

I have an brand new eaton posi that i would sell for 375.00 shipped.

Thanks. I just made a deal with a local shop and will be buying one they have in stock. This works out best for me as I won't have to deal with shipping costs and they can warranty it if there are any issues. Thanks though.

Just do it yourself,I did mine in about 3 hours nothing to it,if you don't mind smelling like gear oil for a few days.

Was this your first experience with this sort of thing? I would assume not. Did you just take it apart and put it together and end up with a perfect pattern?

I'm with you and will let somebody else do this. I know my limitations...

Why does everyone freak out when it comes to setting up a rear end?, its like Yeh i'll rebuild your motor for ya but oh man I stay away from them thar rear ends:confused:

Buy a video, buy a book, buy pinion set up tool, relax on the couch and read then go out to garage and take your time and once you do it you can amaze your friends by letting them know you set your own rear end up then charge em 80 and hr to do thiers:)

When you change the carrier you don't mess with your pinion depth so all you have to worry about is your back lash,I set mine at .08,all you need is a magnetic base and a dial indicator, unless you are pulling the pinon out you don't have to worry about contact pattern just your back lash.

its not that hard !as long as you have the tools

And it doesn't hurt to know what you're doing. I agree with mcasteel2112 in that it's not that big of a deal and with patience and literature even someone who's never done it should be able to pull it off if they're mechanically inclined. However, I don't see a novice doing it in a couple of hours unless they just slap it together without checking anything and I for one would not take the carrier out without at least checking the pattern afterwards. (in addition to checking backlash) Maybe I'm anal, but I think it comes down to that whole ounce of prevention thing.
