Hey,

I just want an opinion for the majority of the turbo buick guys on this one.

I have an 87 motor I'm going to drop into my '85. I got the long block very cheap. (i.e. sub $500). Everything checks out except for the crank as it spun a bearing.... The question of the day is, can these things be turned whatsoever? Or am I shopping for a new crank?

It appears that the victim is #3 or #4 and that while it doesn't look gauged, etc, it looks damaged to the point where fillet for that rod is gone.

My expectations for this engine are minimal. I only want to run 13's - 12's with this car. I do not have the money and time to make a race car out of it, but I want something that can be somewhat fast? If I don't aim for the 9-10 second range is this crank going to be okay or should I not even debate it and replace it?

I will post a link this afternoon with some pictures of it and the bearing.

Thanks!

Charles

Is it already 10/10? I wouldn't hesitate going 20/20 based on your power levels.

Even a NA crank will be fine.

There is more than one 30/30 crank running in the tens...Take it to a competent machinist and have it checked out.

If the crank is still good in your 85, then swap it into the newer motor...

UMMMM
you mean to tell us that the complete fillet is gone?? as it the spot where the rod bearing is flat and not raised like the others??

oops, I gotta learn to read more carefully...

If the fillet is gone, then it is wasted...those fillets are rolled deep.

if your not going to beat on the car, then you can use a NA crank for all that matters-

make sure you use quality bearings and get the car tuned for 0 knock--
there is a reason why the bearing is toasted, its more than likely due to a stock fuel system and too much boost

ps
did you know that the 4.1 motors in these cars have the turbo crank??

Be sure that if you do replace the crank, that you have the rods resized, especially #3 and #4(have them looked at real close), they are probably hammered real bad if the crank is worn down far enough that the rolled fillets are gone...Don't just replace the crank and put new bearings in without doing the rods or you WILL waste the new crank, too...because the big end on the rods probably isn't round anymore...

Good luck...

you know when you drive down a old gravel country road out in the middle of gods green earth,..
and it seems that some good ole boy makes some type of yard art out of left over johndeere parts??
its usually in the form of a mailbox stand, or a windmill of some sort- sometimes if your lucky enough you can spot a windchime or 2- heck sometimes you just think to yourself, WTF was that thing in the front of farmer bobs driveway!?!?!?
golly thats a UIYAT

i would suggest you take the crank down to some good ole boy on a country road and offer the crank to him so he can have a new mailbox post :D
