Hey guys

I managed to get my car starting up and driving again since putting in the crank sensor.

But I've still got the problem that the motor idles like crap and it runs rich. What can I do to fix this problem? Also, when it's idling like crap, it sorta turns side to side in the engine bay, which is due to the crappy idle. It also pushes smoke out the back end everytime I start it up. But I think this is due to the fact that it runs irregularly. I plan to start starting it up more often to get it a little more lively.

Also, is it possible that 87 octane fuel could make our cars run crappy like this?

Please, help.

I'm thinking it could be a leaky injector, cam sensor, ign module/coil pack.

What do you guys think? Input, please guys. I'm getting desperate.

Post your mods, chip and scantool numbers ............

I am totally stock, utterly stock. No mods, unless you count a crank sensor as a 'mod'. ;)

I don't have a scantool at the moment. Though we did run a scantool test before. And my 02 sensor wasn't coming up on it as I recall. Though that was something like a month ago.

It is going to impossible to give advice without scantool numbers as it could be a combination multiple things.
A few things come to mind; TPS, IAC, MAF, O2, plugs, wires, coil, charging system, etc etc.

IMO, A scantool on these cars is like a wrench. You can't do much without one.

Well, I know this much.

The plugs are new in there. The wires I replaced.

I know the 02 wasn't coming up for sure and I've got a high idle. The rpm's were really high and even when we grabbed the throttle body and pulled it back to slow it down, the adjustment never worked.

I guess I ought to really start getting on that scan-tool thing.

I would say pressure test it for vaccum leaks. I had a few on mine when I first got it, lol. It would help to know what color the smoke is, black, bluish grey, or white.

The smoke is white. Condensation, right?

I haven't pressure tested it yet. I would like to. But who could I take that to to get it done?

I've checked the wires and replaced em.

My brother and the people who have come to see it are all saying its the sensors.

Someone just told me who had come to see it repeatedly that he thinks that the Throttle Positioning Sensor may be fouled up. Due to the fact that it was running a high rpm in idle. (3000-4000 rpms) When we tried to adjust it, it would go down while your hand was on it. But then when you let go it didn't adjust itself. It went back to idling really high. He thinks that it may be the tps just being dirty or really really out of wack. It just really seems like a bunch of sensors are going haywire.

Well the white smoke isn't a good sign. Usually means head gasket. I am not the TR professional by any means, but, I am a mechanic for a living and that is what it sounds like to me. But I am not there though. Do you have the factory converter/s on it?? This may just be condensation. Does the "smoke" clear out pretty quickly or does it hang ther for a bit?? Adjusting your TPS like that is going to change the RPMS anyways, I would think, because you are physically telling the ECM to +/- the fuel mixture without moving your throttle plate. I don't know if this is going to help you or not man but investigate it a little bit more and let us know what else is going on. Another question, does the smoke get worse as it warms up to operating temps??

dee

Yes, it does get worse.

But interestingly enough, yesterday when I started the car and had it running, it did not smoke up. But I did smell fuel from the car.

Someone else thought that maybe a cylinder was mis-firing and that it was burning late or something like that?

Would a video of the problem itself help?
