Crazy Shifter Handle Problem

I recently purchaced a brand new shifter handle from one of the vendors on here. I transfered all the hardware over to the new handle. Now the CRAZY part! The handle will not slide all the way down on the shifter rod. I get it half way on and it will go no further. I dont want to beat on it and break it. I have tried liquid soap, oil, and even tried scraping the inside of the handle a bit. Has anyone else had this problem? What are my options? Should i use a vise grip and squeeze the top of the shift rod together? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have seen this on several new handles. I had to use an exacto knife and open the hole a little bit in the handle to get it onto the shifter. I wouldn't squeeze the shift rod. It will crack.
