Hey guys, I've been tracking down a ticking/rattling noise for a while on my car and think I may have found it. I was using an automotive stethoscope and could hear the noise in the downpipe and front part of the exhaust but it was faint. I checked the inspection cover and it was quiet and smooth, so I went to the cross over and it was noisy as heck. It was the worst right in the center if the pipe under the car where it goes behind the oil pan. I'm guessing this indicates I've got a leak on the pipe somewhere? The flanges both sound quiet, it's only loud in the center part under the car. What do you guys think?

Should I pull the cross over off and look for holes/splits or just replace it? Or could it still be something else?

Any ideas are appreciated! I just don't want to pull the cross over off if I don't have to, and am thinking I will just replace it with a new one if I have to take it off.

Thanks in advance!

Stethoscopes really aren't a good tool to find exhaust leaks. Unless you pop the probe off and use the hose... finding a good leak like that might club your eardrum like a baby seal, so be careful.

I've never heard of a stock crossover pipe leaking in the middle but that's not to say it can't happen. Try sucking a little ATF in the FPR hose and see if smokes comes out that area. If you don't want to try that method to verify your theory, put some toilet paper on the end of a stick and wave it around the suspect area. If you find a leak the paper will go berserk.

Hey Earl,I guess you haven't found a way to use your anal lube that you use on everything to find exhaust leaks?

Never tried to find exhaust leaks with my spit.

It does work on tires though. :D
