I have a 1984 oldsmobile cutlass supreme with a 3.8L. I am wanting to put an 85 grand national motor and tranny in it. My car is carburated and the GN motor is FI. How could i make this work, do i change GN motor to carburated and turbo it, or convert my car to FI. The engine and tranny DO NOT come with an ECu, so how much is one of those. How much would i be looking on spending for this if it is possible, i asume it is.
thanks

Definitely keep the FI or you will be backing up. As far as the parts that you will need, simply post a message in the parts wanted section of the board. We have some really great parts guys here who can give you prices and availability on anything you need. Good Luck. ;)

well I know i should keep the motor Fi, but how hard is it to change the whole car to run with FI, the car as it is now is CARBURATED?

You will need to rip everything out of the Olds.

You will need the 85 ECM, Wiring harness in order for all sensors to operate.

You will need to remove the Olds' gas tank. Will not work with FI cars due to special baffling inside tank. Also Hi-Pressure fuel lines required.

There may be other good points to this project maybe someone else will chime in.

Good luck!

You will need:
Gas tank from 84-87 Turbo Regal or 84-88 4.3 V6 Monte Carlo
Fuel lines from 84-87 Turbo Regal
Engine harness which you need to repin the C100 block at the fuse block as well as repinning the diagnostic plug under the dash.
You will have to run a power feed to the back of the car for the fuel pump.
For the 84-85 Turbo Buick engine you will have to change the heater core and possibly parts of the heater box for turbo charger clearance.
I am not sure what trans you are planning to run, but the Turbo Buicks came with the 2004r and that requires a different cross member.
It is a good bit of work to convert it. The 84-85's can use the carbureted 3.8 radiator, shroud, fan and front accessories. The Turbo Buicks had a larger higher amperage alternator and I believe the cast aluminum bracket is different even though some of the more highly option Regals and Cutlass models might have the larger alternator already.
The 86-87 intercooled motors require changing a lot more parts.
To be honest, it isnt even worth trying to converting a car UNLESS you are well aware that it is an expensive swap. There are a ton of things that nickle and dime you. I say this as I spent over $6K converting my father's 88 Monte SS. I still get emails from people asking how to do it and the first thing I warn them is to make sure they have another car to drive and to make sure they have the money since the swap is not cheap. It definitely is not cheaper than going out and buying a car that is already done.
