What's the best way to do this? I just changed my oil & was just curious to check out the inside.

There is a tool specifically made for opening canister style oil filters, it's a great tool to have in the tool box. I bought mine a long time ago, but I think it was around $40

What are you looking for? Unless there's GIGANTIC chunks in the oil filter, or you're a professionally trained oil analysis guy, all you're going to find is a filter element and used motor oil.

I've just recently got the car on the road, after purchasing it several months back. When we pulled the pan, there was some small shaving & a couple chunks that looked weird. You're right, I don't have a trained eye, but was thinkin it wouldn't hurt to look inside there - especially with this being my first oil change after driving it consistantly. Can you give me suggestions?
