I posted an ad in the for sale looking for a trade on my Mustang for a GN. I've had a few emails but I need to ask everyone about a specific car. Exactly how rare/desirable is an 87 WE4 with the WO2 Sport appearance package? I read the story in my Hemmings and the car really interests me. Basically it seems it is a GN in sleeper mode. Identical car underneath and basically appearance wise except wheels, spoiler, emblems etc.. I know of one such car basically in the local area. He said it has somewhere between 30 and 40k miles. I know he hacked the door panels for speakers but otherwise it is basically stock. It is on a farm on gravel roads. I don't have alot of information on the car yet but he is going to stop by and check out the Mustang. Anyone have opinions on rough value with the vague information I do know? Hemmings said 7k low, 11k mid and 15k high. Is that about right?
Thanks in advance for the opinions and input.

They're the most desirable TurboBuick as they are the lightest weight.

All turbo Regals are GN's in sleeper mode with the exception of the chrome bumpers.

Mechanically all turbo Regals are identical, cosmetics are the only real difference. In '87, T's were much rarer than GN's but GN's got/get all the press. Production on the WE4's was 1547 versus around 20,000 plus GN's. Even though GN's are not as rare they tend to cost more (For now. I think it will eventually level out more with only the lowest mileage GN's skewing the price curve). For a car with that mileage, unless there are major problems with it, it should bring at least the mid level price.

Bottom line, IMO it would be a car worth having.

All WE4's had the W02 option. There were only 1547(?) WE4's made, so they are pretty rare. In my opinion, they won't bring any more $ than a run of the mill 87 GN.

Just to clarify, did all 1500 WE4's come with the WO2? I re-read my Hemmings and they said the black WE4's could be had with the WO2 black-out but only for a few weeks. Buick cancelled the WO2 option on black cars to avoid "confusion" of the other models (GN's I assume). They stated very few black WE4's with the WO2 were actually made. If this is true any guesses on total WE4/WO2 black cars?

All 1547 WE4s were black with the blackout trim(WO2).

Sorry to jack the thread but...

The name "Turbo T" only applied to the WE4? I always thought my 87 Regal "T" package was known as a Turbo T but apparently not.

Actually from everything that I've seen the Turbo-T was only mentioned in the promos for the WE4. In '87 the LC-2 turbo engine was available in any Regal series. There were four. The GN (GNX's were pulled from regular GN production and modified to be a GNX), the Limited, which is actually rarer than a WE4, the Turbo-T aka WE-4, and everything else was a base Regal with a turbo or aka Turbo Regal. The T badge is for the touring suspension, option Y56 IIRC, that came on these cars as a required option for the LC-2 driveline. You could have the T package (and emblem) on a V-8 Regal, which also got you the turbine wheels and the sport steering wheel. With the GN and the WE4 the LC-2 was mandatory of course. Limiteds could be had with any engine choice. What is not clear is how many n/a Limited and base Regals with the T-package were made as I'm sure that the numbers normally posted reflect only the LC-2 powered ones.

The WO2 option, which did not include black bumpers, was only available on a base Regal for a short while and was then discontinued. You could still get a black Regal but it had all birght trim. The only way to get the black bumpers other than a GN was on a WE4, which included a manditory WO2 package option. I'm not sure if the black bumpers were installed as a part of the WE4 option or if it was a mandated part modification on the WO2 option when the WE4 was ordered.

There is a lot of misinformation quoted in both the press and in general public about these cars (Check the back of the Hot Wheels GN package ) but thanks to some people like Dennis Kirban, Poston's Buick, and a nice guy in Fla that goes by the name turbofish38 we can look at our cars as sort of an X-File. The truth is out there.

I did not know that. Thanks for the info. Any idea how long the black WO2 was available for?

I *think* somebody in engineering or marketing saw those black regals with black trim and chrome bumpers rolling down the assembly line and decided it would look better with black bumpers.

I still haven't decided if it's cooler to have a black WO2 chrome bumper car or a genuine WE4.

I'm pretty sure the 1987 black W02 cars(black car, crome bumper) were only made for 3 months (Sept86-Dec86) and as such are much harder to find then the WE4 cars. I've only seen maybe a handfull of these cars since buying my 87 'T' in 1992. So I guess you can draw your own conclusions. If I were in the market looking, I would look for the chrome bumper W02 cars. Just my 02 and I hope the info helps.............Ken B.

Thanks for the opinions and input. Everyone here seems to be in agreement on the black vs chrome bmper discussion. The part that confused me was the opinions of which is rarer, black or chrome bumpers on a black car. It seems the consensus is chrome. I'm glad I asked because I took the Hemmings article as fact.

"The announcement of the model came compliments of a Buick Product bulletin dated November 11, 1986; already well into the model-year production, with a production start date of December 8. Interestingly, just two days prior, a bulletin had been released stating that the WE4 would no longer be available with the WO2 black-out kit trim package."

"According to Dennis Kirban's book, Kirban's Guide to 1986 & 1987 Buick Turbo Regals, "They (Buick) did this so it would not be confusing having two Turbo Regals available at the same time in black." He goes on to explain, "The only difference between the new WE4 version and the black one with the WO2 exterior sport package would be the old WE4 version would have matching black bumpers. The new one would have chrome bumpers."

So here's another fact question you guys will know. Will the tag in the trunk show WE4 and/or WO2 on a black TR with the black bumpers? Is there a place that lists what all the codes mean? I'm sure it's on this site but I have not located it yet.
