Direct Scan Laptop Support?

I just got Direct scan and am attempting to load it onto my laptop. For some reason, the floppy drive is not working. I have tried other known good disks in the drive and I continue to get the message "drive is not accesible. The device is not ready."
This is an external A drive, hooked up to the laptop (IBM 600X). When I attempt to open DS, the light on the drive comes on and I can hear it attempting to read the file (?).
Please someone help. I would love to get this program working.

One last note, the drive does not seem to recognize that a disk is in it. I tried to do something else with the drive and I am told there is no disk inserted. But YES, I did have a disk properly inserted.
I love technology.

I took apart another A drive I had and "rigged" it to the laptop. I was able to load the software from there.
Now I have to start working on the ecm.
Good thing it snowed today.
