Hey,

Looking to build a 86/87 turbo v6 and I need to know if a standard '85 Buick V6 block can be used. Also, what are the differences?

Thanks,

Jim

They are essentially the same except for:
Deck height it used different lenght head bolts.
No turbo oil drain in the front of the block.
The lifter valley is the open design not "reinforced" like the 109.
The front cam bearing journal is not grooved.
None of these things would limit the engine from performing at the same level as a 109.
Just some heads up stuff.

You can also go to the junk yard and pick up a 3.8 liter 109 block. It won't have the drain back plug for the turbo tapped but you'll see a pad there. It can be tapped for a fitting. The 109 block was a very common block you shouldn't have a problem finding one cheep. And Yes It's The Same as the 86/87 block. ;)

block

Great, now if I do use the "standard block", can I use the standard crank/rods? Looks like the stock turbo stuff isn't too pricy.

The car in question is a '76 Vega. Full frame, 9" rear w/3.00 gears, mustang II front, TH200R4 & 6 point rollbar system. Vehicle weight should be 2000 - 2200 lbs.

Looking to run about 8-9 lbs boost, no nitrous, and knock down 30 mpg.

Crank*and rods are the same.

*there is a turbo crank and non turbo crank, denoted by the fillets on the rod journals on the turbo crank.
