A friend of mine had a '79 Gold Edition that did a similar thing, split the car in half, but he made it out without being seriously injured. Those cars are built like tanks compared to the light weight stuff used the past 15 or so years. Glad you made it out ok as well.I still have a passion for that car.
When I was 17 I wraped my 79 6.6 4 speed around a loaded concrete truck head on at about 80 mph........
Not a good thing. It was black/black with the orange and red bird.

It runs pretty good for a stock 300 HP stang
Once broke in it will develop a "whine" under the hood and a computer flash with a few other goodies......Off to call Grumpy LOL

Or at least patch up until your 40 then it all comes back apart again. The car was not so lucky. I use to have picks of the bell housing up in the windshield where the car was basically broke in half.
