ive read in alot of tb's that you need to put a chain tensioner on a new timing chain when you get one. is this necessary for the stock one or for a chain timing set also?

Wakebdr,

If you get a double roller timing chain take the tensioner off. If you use a stock type replacement then keep the tensioner.

Caleb,

It's better to be safe than sorry. Glad I could answer your question. FWIW, I have a GN engine in my garage right now where the guy left the tensioner on a double roller chain and it ate itself.

Some double rollers chew up the tensioner, some don't. Unless you have a large cam and heavy valve springs, play it safe and use a stock steel replacement with the tensioner.
I've been there, done that with a double roller with a tensioner...luckily I found out about the tensioner after I only had driven it about 100 miles...took it all back apart to find the tensioner was already chewed about a 1/4 of the way down from the double roller.

This was about 6-7 years ago, can't remember what brand it was, but I had purchased it from either ATR or BGC. For some reason, I think I still have the box with the original stock gear/chain in it the box now somewhere in my garage, I'll try to find it today.
BTW, it did not come with the tensioner, I remember getting one from the local auto store. The install instructions did not mention the tensioner either way.

Found the box in the garage in my stash of original GN parts, it was an "Edelbrock True Roller" part#7829 that I purchased from ATR.
