i am going to be putting a new fuel pump in my car, and i want to have an empty tank when i do this, i know there is a way that you can remove the shrader valve from the end of the fuel rail and drain the tank. the part that i dont understand is how do i keep the fuel pump running with the car off?

any ideas?

There's a loose connector with I believe a brown wire usually located somewhere behind the alternator. You can run a jumper wire from it to the post on the alternator and this will energize the fuel pump. Then just run a drain hose from the fuel rail to a gas can. There are some venders that sell a kit to do this if you don't want to put it together yourself. Also a great way to drain out your street gas when you're at the track.

TRY THIS: A 4 or 5' length of 3/8" clear hose works fine for this purpose. It will slip on to the end of the fuel rail (always use a clamp!)

Run the fuel pump to empty the tank, by using an insulated wire to jumper between the GRAY test connector (in the wiring harness up by the alternator) and the HOT terminal on the back of the alternator. By using the clear hose, you can look for bubbles in the output from the fuel rail to tell when the tank is getting down to the last drop. Don't run the tank 100% dry, since the pump may cavitate enough to damage it.

YOU CAN BUY A COUPLE OF ALIGATOR CLIPS AND SOME WIRE AND MAKE A NICE LITTLE WIRING HARNESS FOR DOING THIS, FOR WHEN YOU GO TO THE TRACK, AND WANT TO REPLACE YOUR PUMP GAS WITH RACE FUEL.

I was too lazy to go the fuel-pump and test-port route so I bought a cheap siphon kit at the local auto parts store. Worked fine. It has a little hand-pump thing on it so you don't get a mouth full of gasoline. I think it was <$10.

Why do you all have to make it so difficult?
Do what I did:
Drive the car around, fry a little rice, cook a few tires, and head home when the fuel level gets low. ;)

hey neil, i have a jumper i made to drain tanks sitting in the garage give me call. you can take one if you need it, got a bunch of different lengths.
