Well I decided to replace the two weak links in my car, the driveshaft and the axles. With my current set-up I am always concerned that I will blow the stock units up, so I felt it was time.

I purchased a new unit from strange with a chromemoly transmision yoke and shaft and standard spicer pinion yoke. I upgraded the trans yoke since I have twisted the splines in the past and don't want to worry about it in the future.

For now I am purchasing the stock replacement moser axles, then next winter I will sell them and throw in a 30 spline carrier unit.

Now for the question:
I have noticed a clunk when I left off the gas and the car is under load. The sound is clearly from the rear end. Not sure if this is wear in the gears or if the crush sleeve is allowing to much play or worn vearings? Car has about 65k on it but was raced hard before I got it. The motor and trans are fresh and strong, the only thing I've done with the rear end is flush it out and intsall a TA cover a couple years ago. So time for a rebuild? Or do I just jump to the
30 spline now and do axles next winter?

Looking for advice!

Dave

I would pull the cover and axles and check the backlash. If your going to go with 30 spline now is the time to do it. I went with the Eaton 30 pline with the moser axles. Get the better yolk also. Good luck

Not trying to hijack, but I'd like to be first in line to buy your 28 spline mosers as long as they are direct stock replacements. Please keep my info handy when that time comes.

Sorry I'm no help.
Post edited - I'm a dummy and thought you had already bought the moser 28's.

When I swapped my driveshaft, the new one was hitting my kirban ds loop. Went with a metco and it clears.

I won't even sell my Kirban xs loop when I take it off I am going to use it as a wheel chalk.....
Definitely not a product I would buy again....

Well here the results of my rear inspection:

First: Noticed the spider gears have significant amount of play. When holding the pinion and moving wheels back and forth the gears that ride on the pin are jumping up and down. A noticable knock is clearly heard. I didn't have a way to measure how much but a good guess would be between .080-.125".

Second: I removed spider gears and check backlash. I got 0.016- 0.017". Sping shows signs of wear. Pin looks okay with normal wear. When I place spider gear on pin I can rock them back and forth. Seems like these should have a closer fit, but maybe this acts like a bearing to allow for an oil slick. Unsure....

Third: I installed a new 1350 spicer yoke to measure for new driveshaft. I snugged nut till the pinion felt good, no movement. Then I hit it with an inpact and it moved slightly. Bearings got tight, I backed nut off a turn pinion spun free. (Couldn't find and torque specs on this nut.)

Fourth: Significant fretting on driver side carrier bearing, shim also shows signs of fretting. Passenger side has a chunk missing out of one rollers in the bearing.

Fifth: Axle bearings look good, I replaced them a couple years ago.

So what to do now? New 30 spline eaton? 9"rear? Maybe the best of both, 8.5 30 spline with weld 9" bearing retainers. I wonder if I could make my backing plates work with the 9" bearing plates?
