Is there such a thing as a FREE DVD decoder ? I can't seem to find one.

I just bought a used laptop with a DVD player but it won't play them until I get a decoder. Is there anything I can do without shelling out more $$ ?

Any help is appreciated.

Many, if not most, newer PCs are bundled with free "Lite" versions of PowerDVD or WinDVD. These are probably the two most popular DVD software players for Windows. Maybe you could get a copy from a friend who still has their original installation CDs.

After you have it on your HD, how do you convert the video to mpeg or wav files???

I also need to get some audio off a DVD.

Does anyone know how to copy a copy-righted DVD, i dont like lending out my DVD's to friends cause they always get scratched so i want to make back ups, how do i. The program i got says it cant do it.

You likely won't be able to make a "copy" because most DVD's are now done on dual layer media. Even if you have a dual layer burner, the blank discs are $11.00 each!

DVDShrink or DVD Decrypt will both allow you to decode, and by weeding out the extras, you can usually reburn the movie onto one regular disc. Or if you really want the extras, you can span the whole thing over 2 discs and even insert a custom "change disc" screen.
