If its all brand new what's in the lower front right corner- it looks like paint or dirt?

I know this is a old thread but I am changing a front seal in my earlbrown cover.
My question is I noticed on my cover gasket that the hole that opens into the oil pump is covered.
Why is that?
Also when I put the cover back on is there any priming procedures or should it just pick up on it's own.

Thanks

I guess I have the right gasket because it's covered in this picture too.

Sorry to hijack but when you get a Earl cover wear do you exactly put the Vaseline.

Do you just tap the seal in or should I have it pressed in?
I tapped it in but its not completely even but I don't want to hit it to hard.
Does anyone use a little rtv on both sides of the gasket or one side or not at all.
Thanks
Has anyone heard from earlbrown I pmed him nearly a week ago?

That's the right gasket. The actual oil feed hole is the bottom one. The smaller top one feeds the engine. You'll notice they are both smaller than the openings on the timing cover.

You need to glue it in place and set it face down on something flat like a glass table or a hookers large cocaine mirror. The trick is to move the gasket as far to the outside as possible while still keeping the datum holes uncovered. The reason is the large odd shaped oil feed has a thin area on the gasket. If the gasket wants to 'close up', it'll cause you to have a very thin sealing area on the pickup port. The last thing you want is to suck air on the low pressure side of the pump.

If you get a cover from me, there's no need to mess with the gears or pack anything. Just pour a little oil in the port and let it fly.
