Ok I have a 400 tranny with a trans-brake on my car. I can only make about 4 passes at the track and then i shell the converter. I was wanting to know who makes a good converter that will last threw the torcher of the trans-brake. I've been told the front tires pull anywhere from 12" to 18" off the ground on the launch.:D I would really like to make a pass down the track. Thanks Tim

400 GONER??

Tim, what's failing in the converters?? Sounds to me like, if you are getting them from the same vendor, it's time for a change.
I think there could be a misalignment in the bolt up, converter running cocked in the end of the crank, no balloon plate, fins not brazed properly, etc, etc, etc.

Have you seen the converter when they are cut open??

Have you taken a look at the thrust brg in the engine yet??
I have found on 3 seperate converters that I've tried the mount flange is not NEAR flat on the flex plate[ a billet Mondello Reactor plate]. I had to use a shim washer under 2 of the stands to get it strait and on 1 converter had to shim all 3 as the center of the converter was hitting B4 the mount bolt hole stands were in contact w/ the FW.

HTH,

TCI..

best t350-400 converter i've ever had was a ATI treemaster....very efficent compared to others i have run

none were in a turbo car just heavilly nitroused cars..:D

ATI Treemaster. Put in one on my Chevelle a few weeks ago, works GREAT.
I got the 10" that stalls at 3000 rpm or so. Tranny is 400 with Gear Vendors OD behind it.
They will build the converter to your car/motors spec.

Thanks for all of the help. Does anyone know the number to ATI? I checked with TCI and they said they would build me a converter to my specs for $200 if i they used my old one. It's a 10" converter. Thanks Tim

oops Brucy i thought your converters were just for 200's..:(

i dont think you could find any better quality than the parts you can get from Bruce and a great guy to deal with (most of the time :D ) J/k ;)

Neil Chance or ATI are both killer converters. The best IMO. I ran a ATI all last year with no problems. I just installed a Neil Chance Pro Mod converter. I killed 6 converters in 2000 over a 6 month time frame. Benn there done that and it sucks.

Lonnie why did you change from the ATI? I thought you were having good success with it.

The ATI unit does a great job. I changed turbos and needed to change stalls on the converter. Neil Chance offers a unit that bolts together so stall changes can be made without sending the converter back to the manufacture. (3 weeks and $200-$450 each change in the case of my ATI) The NC converter gives me the adjustabilty that I wanted to get the converter to free stall and still be efficent as I can now make the changes myself. I can now change the way the converter loads the engine, Hits the tires and many other things very much like a stick car can with a 3K weighted clutch assembly. The only reason for the change was adjustabilty.
