Im having some trouble w/ the computer in my 87 gn. The problem is when my friend tries to hook up his laptop to my car the computer doesnt read my car. Ive checked all the connections on the computer and connection and all the wires are connected. A friend of mine said that the previous owner put a computer out of a turbo-T in it and thats why it wont read. My first question is... Is that even feaseable to install a turbo-T computer in a 87 GN and it actually work? Could this be the problem? Please give any help you can. Any and all info is greatly appreciated. Jay

The ECMs are the same for all 86-7 turbo Regals, whether they're GNs or Ts. So yes, the ECM could be from either, but no, that's not your problem. If he's trying to connect a scan tool to the ALDL port under the dash, and the vehicle runs normally otherwise but won't connect, you likely have a wiring problem from the ECM to the ALDL connector. See www.gnttype.org for wiring diagrams. If the wiring is OK there is a remote chance that the serial communication circuitry in the ECM is bad. If you want a spare John DiCarlo (RedRegalT on this BB) sells 'em fairly cheaply.

thanks

So you think it is more than likely a wiring problem but slightly posiible bad ECM? I'll check the wiring and look for any frayed, loose, orcut wires and let you know how the search turns out. The car did run fine other than the inability to connect w/ the laptop. Thanx again...Jay

And...

If i were to replace the ECM and the wiring to the port would that solve the problem?:) Is there any sort of kit for this? Anyone?

Troubleshoot it first. Nobody makes a kit to repair your wiring; it's only one wire for the serial data though so it's not exactly rocket science. Just follow the link I gave you earlier and spend a little quality time with a multimeter.
