egr code 32

I got a code 32 a while back and I replaced my egr valve.The check engine light has not come on for a while and then the other day it came back on again after I had been running the car kind hard.I checked the filter and it is hard and yellow,when I tried to put it back on after blowing it out ,it actually cracked.The filter needs to be replaced and I do not know if this little filter can be causing this light and code.When the light comes on and the code appears on my scanmaster the car will idle funny and it runs rich.what do you guys suggest I do first?I reset it and it does not come on againFor a few days when I get on it real hard.

that little filter makes all that much difference?I mean I took it off for a few hours and the light came on again.This is after the egr change.
