I'm thinking of putting an EGT probe in the factory O2 bung and running a gauge in the car with FP. Is anyone else using EGT to tune and what are normal EGTs pre-turbo with our cars? Does it vary with pump gas/alky and race gas/alky? I like the idea that the EGT doesn't need to be calibrated. Basically I'm concerned about the accuracy of most widebands on a regular basis and I want to take my tuning to the next level. Any feedback/previous experience with pyrometers in a TR is greatly appreciated.

My car has always run the fastest with the hottest EGT w/o knock. So to start, you will need a scan tool to monitor knock and log your EGT. I still use Tlink and just capture the run and set max hold on the EGT. Get back to the pits and compare. The exact temp will vary on placement and engine. Mine runs 1425 w/o knock. Any more and it starts to tickle the knock sensor and slows down. Once the baseline is established you can shoot for your max temp while changing fuel, boost, timing, or whatever.

With my old egt setup (replacing stock O2) the car would always be the quickest at 1675F, so obviously there are a few variables in the temps. The car would run hard when it was lean and would lose almost 8mph in the quarter when the egt was down near 1600. Usually saw 1200 deg at lean cruise, 65-70 mph.

I was told by atr 1450-1550 is ideal. Of course, they also said to put it in the downpipe closest to the turbo which was not the correct placement. Gotta change that some day. Tim

Thanks guys. Any brand of gauge recommended that I can get for pyrometer and fuel pressure that match? I appreciate all the help. Any issues with using EGT instead of a wideband?
