Electric Dog Fence?

Anybody have one? Thoughts on what to look for? Worth it?

We just moved into a new house (to us) that does not have a fence. The standard fence for the neighborhood more or less is wood picket type.. no chain link. I am thinking a $1000 electronic system for the mutt might be a better buy than the $3000+ I am guessing I will have to spend for a wood fence.

They work amazingly well...we have one by invisible fence and it keeps the dog in the limits of the fence. They are also not an eyesore like a normal fence.

The house is also on a lake and the dog loves swiming around, but will not cross the line without the collar off. Once the dog is trained it wont cross the fence with the collar on, unless it figures out the batteries are dead. It will also learn coming back to the yard will shock it too, so be carefull if it gets out, it wont wanna come back in. And dont pull the dog across with the collar on.

Fortunately my 3 year old and 1 year old won't take off into the neighbors yard and start barking and growling with thier kids! (unlike my stupid dog)

Otherwise we live on a quiet court so the kids are ok!

Don't they sell ROPES where you live. Unless your dog has teeth like a piranah, the rope should work,
The dog isn't worth a 1000 bucks unless he can work on your car.

The electric fences work most of the time unless you have a bigger dog or one that just doesnt care. I have a golden retriever that ran through the electric fence so many times that the prongs on the collar burnt through his skin and eventually poked into his neck......we didnt notice until we saw a spot of blood on him one day. Guess he's a trooper!

I picked up the $159.00 deal from Home Depot called Radio Fence for my chocolate Lab. It took less than 3 days to train her and it works great. It got nailed by lightning a few months ago and they sent me a new transmitter no questions asked. It has a 10 year warranty.

i know of a bunch of people that have had great success with these, therefore i got one for my border collie. it flat out does not work for her. she figured out almost instantly that if she got a running start across the wire than she would be shocked for a short period of time and then free. i believe that it all depends on what kind of dog you've got. i wouldnt waste my $$$ on one if you've got a hunting or herding dog, they'll see something on the outside and go for it. good luck, aaron

I personally am AGAINST the electric invisible fence typr things...
TRAIN your dog. It takes a little time and perserverance but you relationship will develope better.

If you've ever had to take one of those collars of a dog when their skin has rotted and festering with infection and maggots you wouldn't want to use one either (neighbors dog)

I agree....to some extent. Apparently your neighbor doesn't care much for his dog. I put the collar on my dog for 2 days and then she doesn't need the collar for a week. It's almost like it's a "reminder" not to cross the line. Again, dogs are different and some are more obedient than others.

I had pondered this too as fences are not cheap. You still have to train the dog in terms of the boundaries and, like prev. folks have mentioned, some dogs will run right through it.

My primary reason for not investing in one, besides the fact that I think their a tad on the cruel side, was that it doesn't stop anybody from coming INTO your yard. If a kid were to wander back there and get bit, you're in court. That was the logic I followed.

We have a stupid little Bischon that doesn't go out of the yard anyway, but the wife would feel better having some kind of fence. Even the best trained dogs will still take off when they see a rabbit etc.

I don't think my city has a leash law, but my $.02 is that it would be more irresponsible to let the dog out without some form of restraint.

It is getting installed on Friday so I will post results later. Our neighbors have one also and they have no problems with keeping thier golden retriever coralled.

I bought the electric fence from walmart for 100 bucks. You bury the wire around the
perimeter of the yard and mount the transmitter box on a wall near an outlet.
plug the starting and ending ends of the wire into it and turn it on. the wire is an antenna
and the collar is the receiver. You can adjust the strength of the signal by a dial on the box
. It made by pet guard and comes with training flags and video. we have a jack russell
and if she's out long enough with out the collar she figures it out and has escaped.
Luckily there are two dogs across the alley she gets along with and goes there to play. But
it the collar is on she wont attempt to cross. Not even in full stride chasing a rabbit or
squirrel. Best 100 bucks spent on the dog.
