Hi,
New member here. I am planning to purchase a GN soon, and will be looking at one this weekend. It has some modifications, and I will need to pass VA emissions. I am in the northern VA area, and we have some relatively strict emissions here. As part of the inspection, they look at certain things, and my relative unfamiliarty with the GN makes things tough. a few questions:

1. Does the stock air cleaner have a thermostatic system from the factory? This allows pre-heated air to warm the car up quicker, usually using a tube from the manifold to supply hot air, then shuts off to allow cold "outside" air to enter after warm up.

2. Evaporative systems... what do I look for?

3. Chip changes... this car has an aftermarket chip installed, larger 009 injectors, how much may this change the air/fuel ratios?

The testing is visual, some of course I understand, and the other is a chassis dyno type of road test with 15 and 25 MPH readings.

Any thoughts??
Thanks in advance!

Temperature controlled air cleaner is not required on an 87

Charcoal cannister is on the driver side, front of of innner fenderwell. it looks like a black plastic can with vacuum hoses and an electrical connector hook up to in on the top.

As long as chip is burned for 009s, it should be no problem.

3. Depends on the chip, and how strictly they snif your exhaust.

You'll likely need a smog chip burned for the 009's. Many aftermarket chips run an open loop idle which will fail smog tests in a flash!!

But if they don't check the exhaust for emissions, don't worry about it. JUST MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A CAT. CONVERTER IN PLACE! or at least one that will pass visual.

One of the questions I asked state inspectors back when I ran a smog station, Since there aren't any controls connected with the air cleaner was a K&N cone filter legal & never got a definite answer. What say you to this .

1. Get an emissions chip burned for your size injectors from Eric at Turbo Tweak.
2. Make sure your catalytic converter is in good working order.
3. Make sure the EGR valve is functioning properly.
4. I turn down my fuel pressure a few lbs. with the emissions chip and go right through emissions, and they gave me the standing idle test last time I went. Time before that it was the dyno. Oh and of course the car has to be in good tune!

Because the ATS was attached to the plastic tube between the MAF and stock air box, technically it would only be legal if you attached the K&N filter to the plastic tube without any modifications.
