Emissions inspections if car not driven more than so many miles per year?

Seems like I heard that in Texas, if you don't drive a car more than X miles per year, you are exempt from having emissions testing each year no matter how old the car is.....I thought I heard you have to specifically ask/mention this when having the car inspected otherwise its the regular inspection..they don't do it automatically.

Anyone know about this?

Dave, something makes me think that maybe it is.. Once when I was getting the GN inspected, it failed the first try because I had no cat on it...the guy was familiar with me since I had several other cars inspected there...so he power braked it the second try and it passed...then he said if he would have noticed that I only drove the car 1300 miles in the last year he wouldn't have had to do that to make it pass....the guy was of foriegn descent and very difficult to understand so I didn't ask any more questions since he got it to pass anyway...he's no longer in business though, but I heard this somewhere else if you bring it to the inspectors attention that it was not driven over so many miles in the past year there is a different inspection they go thru.

I was told the same thing when I inspected my car last May. They told me that if I didn't drive more than 5,000 miles/ yr. I could by pass the emissions. I think it cost more money, not sure of the details, but it is true. I wanted my car to pass emissions so I could say the car is fast and passes emissions.

I heard the same thing last year at our club show at Chuck's.
First one of the year is this Saturday!!!

Had to get a plug in. Anyway, I was talking to this guy who had a high compression motor in an S10 pickup. I noticed his inspection sticker. He told me if you drive a car less than 2000 miles you can be exempt from the emission as a "special fuel vehicle". In his case it was race gas, but he said same would be for alcohol or what ever. I guess if you don't drive it much it 's not going to pollute the air much.

Man, and I just went through all kinds of crap to get my GN inspected. So, next question is, do we have to have some sort of paperwork proving our mileage p/year and our exemption incase we get pulled over?....if so, where do we get that from? Anyone with more info on this, it would be GREATLY appreciated!

I don't think you need any paper work, because the mileage is recorded on your inspection sticker. All that needs to be done if pulled over is a little math.

Oh boy.. with some of the troopers I've had to deal with, that could take hours!

It would be nice to get a solid answer on this one though. I think i've driven my GN 500 miles in the last 6 months....

I get to go back to the inspection station next month and I'm on pretty good terms with the inspector since I go there about every other month and I seem to be their only Customer
I'll see what he tells me...but he may not know either...this place is basically a salvage yard that also does inspections if you get my drift.

Here's a quote from the Texas DPS website:

Low Mileage Waiver
There is a low mileage exemption for motorists who drive less than 5000 miles/year. To qualify for this exemption you must:

1. Fail both the initial test and free retest
2. Incur $100 of emissions related repairs
3. Drive less than 5,000 miles/year

If you meet these qualifications then you would qualify for the low mileage waiver. You can go to the DPS challenge station in your area for more information on the forms to complete.

I'm not sure if this is very clear, but maybe it'll help. This almost sounds like something you would have to do every year.

hmm... based on that, if we were to take one of our cars up there without the cat, let it fail, then bring it back with a cat, we'd satisfy the $100 emmisions repairs.... Sounds like a plan to me!
