I'm needing to replace the engine wireing harness in my 84T. The old one is cut up (and chewed up) pretty bad. Is there an easier way to do this. Looks like it would be about as easy to pull the engine out first. Are there any tricks to putting in a new harness?

I just replaced the harness on my 87 with a new one from Caspers. The most time consuming part is to pull away the inner plastic fender on the passenger side. You don't need to remove it, but you need to get 3/4 of the bolts out. A couple of them are not easy. Once you can pull the inner fender away from the firewall, you can access the metal bracket that holds the harness in place. Running another harness is time consuming but not that hard. If you decide to do it keep in touch. I have other tips for you.

Yeah I'm going to do it. Probably start next week. I just got the car into the dry so I can work on it. Any help or tricks will be appreciated.

caspers is a good company and the quality is excellent

I hear there stuff is great but I have already bought a stock harness from a board member here. It is clean and appears to be in perfect condition with no cuts or nicks. It was a tenth of the price of the caspers unit so I'm not out much if it doesn't work for some reason. The only question that I have is that the prong that screws into the iginition module has different colored wireing than the stock one that is in it now. For example the first wire to the left on the ccci unit now is yellow and the first wire to the left on the new harness is white with a stripe (I'm not sure of the exact color but I just know they are different). Has anyone ever seen this?

Taking the fender off is easy compared to routing the front of a hot air car, I thought my 84 defied physics, the harness had no beginning or end, LOL.

Would it be better to take the entire fender off or just the inner fender? I'm a vergin at this.

I just did a full Casper's replacement for a guy in Cincinnati a few weeks back. Ive never done a wiring harness replacement before but we removed all the bolts holding the inner fender well on the inside of the engine compartment and let the fender well drop. We did think about pulling the fender but there was WAY MORE involved. It was easy access after dropping the fender well and did the replacement within 4 hours.

Yes, sir. I agree. Do not pull the fender, only the inner fender. Some of the bolts are difficult to access, but with a little patience it is possible.

Guys, I am attempting to do this. When you say inner fender well, do you mean the plastic well or do you mean the metal inner fender??? I am confused. I tried to get the plastic one off, but I have 1 measely bolt left that I cannot get to thats hidden behind the AC box. Talk about a PITA! Or do you mean unbolt the inner metal fender and drop the unit as one piece?

Yes, the plastic fender with the impossible bolt. I had to lay on my back and use several extensions to get to it. You don't really need to remove the plastic fender. Just take off the bolts around the back part and pull it away to access the firewall. There is a little bracket holding the harness in place. That one bolt is really tough to get to. I was never able to put it back on.

I am replacing my plastic well on the passenger side (its cracked) so I wanted to remove it and figured it would make my casper's engine harness install easier. Should I just remove the entire fender and go that route since I have to remove the plastic well anyways?

If I were going to replace the inner fender, then I would remove the outer fender. Are you installing a Casper's?

I told you what I would do. I didn't say I'd done it. I have never removed the outer fender, so I don't know.

If you remove it as one piece, the outer and inner together, then I think it's easier. But I have done a lot of body work over the years. Lining the fenders up is rather easy on a non recently painted car, the pieces pretty much fall right back in line and the washers are easy to line up because you can easily tell right where they were.
