Driving to work yesterday my engine started cutting out poping and then would die. After waiting a few minutes it would restart and I would get a few more miles and then the loss of power poping and die. It started getting harder to restart but Imade it home. Is this a possible symptom of coil pack or something else.

Do you have the stock Mass Air Flow sensor? Try unplugging it when it is running and see if anything changes. Or, when the car is running, tap on it with a wrench a few times and see if the car acts differently. If so, you need a new MAF sensor.

Yes it has the stock mass air. The car seems to run normal when cold. The problem happened when it was hot and had been driven for about a half hour.

The first two things that come to mind are:

1) Fuel pump
A fuel pump on it's way out will sometimes pump fine until it gets warmed up good. Then it will quit supplying fuel. After it cools down, it may start pumping fuel again.

2) Coilpack
The coilpack and/or ignition module are heat sensitive.

Do you know if any of the above have been replaced before? Popping like that and dying could either be fuel related or the coilpack and possibly the ignition module may be at fault.

Do you have a scan tool handy?

My friend's Supra used to do the exact same thing. The fuel pump are overheating and shutting off.

The fuel pump is a new poston performance pump but as far as I know the coil pack and module are original. No codes are triped.

Did you try what I suggested with the MAF sensor? Tap on it with a wrench when it starts to run like crap and see if it gets better. Also, try unplugging it at idle and see what happens.

Crank sensor is also heat sensitive...I've had one go bad that had the same symptoms as what you've got...Replaced the crank sensor and all is well...

To check it, after it stalls and won't start, hook up a volt/ohmeter on the 20V scale to the center wire of the crank sensor and crank the motor over...The voltage should go up and down as the motor spins over...If the voltage stays steady or doesn't show a reading, then the sensor is bad...

The problem is so intermittant that it is hard to diagnos. the day it happened I was on the freeway and theres not much room to trouble shoot. However I changed the mass sensor as I had a spare. Problem has not occured again so Iam holding my breath when driving. The part that gets me is the severe popping in the intake and exaust. Sounded more like an ignition problem. Thanks for the comments.
