I tested the knock sensor by doing the old tap next to the sensor. Sure enough it would give me a new count every time I tapped next to the sensor. I'm tuning with turbolink, and I saw the ESC counts but no spark retard. Why? Shouldn't it have pulled some spark? The car was at idle, and a little above idle (800-1200rpm).

O.K. I checked the torque on the knock sensor and it's 14lbs/ft, so I know that's correct. I also read in the manual that the ecm won't take spark away under 900rpm. Should I be able to run 18-19lbs of boost and 760mV on 93 octane? (that's what's happening) I just don't get any retard or knock counts when I run it hard and am suspicious. Should I go up in boost or timing? Currently timing is 19/17 (lowgear/highgear). This is a rebuilt TTA and I have a translator + to play with fuel & timing. Thanks if anyone can help.

It sounds like your knock sensor is working properly. There are certain "rules" that the computer has for pulling back timing based on the ESC counts. One ESC event (like tapping on the sensor) shouldn't pull back timing. The computer looks at the ESC counts and if they are intense enough...or if enough events happen in a certain time period the computer will pull the timing.

It is unusual to run that much boost with 93 octane pump gas, but some guys do it. What chip are you using....some chips defeat the knock retard feature of the stock chip. Some aftermarket cams allow more boost on pump gas....what heads are on the car?...what's the weather like today? Many variables...

If you can run 18-19 lbs of boost on pump gas, that's GREAT! But I hear what you're saying....I would be a little nervous too. The stock O2 sensor is not very accurate. A good test would be to look at your Exhaust Gas Temp at WOT. I think most guys tune for around 1650 degF EGT. I know that's not a simple thing to test....you'll have to get an EGT gauge, but then you'll know for sure.

Good Luck,
John

17 total timing? no wonder why it doesn't knock. That's not enough, turn it up to 21ish. That should be good for 93 octane. ;)
