Actually, it's not an accident that the gauge stays on full and then drops QUICKLY from half to "E". It's designed to do that. The idea is to give the driver an anxiety that he/she is running out of gas quickly and needs to refuel soon. I don't have the article on hand, but gas gauges are designed to lie. That's why they stay on FULL for so long. Yes, you ARE burning gas... NO there isn't REALLY still a full tank.
I beleive Cadillac had a car with digital dash back in the 80s that showed gas in gallons, but was designed to tell the TRUTH... many drivers complained to dealers that their cars were getting poor mileage when in reality, the numbers were just dropping quicker from "FULL" but fell steadily unlike conventional fuel gauges.
Oh.. I ran out of gas once with my old GMC Jimmy. It had the digital dash with the bar graph... it used to be super accurate, but after many years it started losing it's accuracy. Also, ran the Golf here out of while in Amsterdam... damn gauge was reading 1/4.... talk about a liar!!
