So, like the title states. I have an exhaust ticking that seems to be coming from the crossover pipe. I have factory headers, they were just off and i welded both sides up, they were cracked pretty good. Dude before had no turbo or exhaust brackets. Anyway, there is no gasket of any sort on the x-over pipe. Is there supposed to be donuts or something? I have a 3in DP. no cat, and dual 3in full exhuast with 3in SS magnaflows. Pretty quit compared to my other cars. I can lay under it and get close to the x-over pipe and it is "ticky" in sound. Is this normal? The long block is stock, and I don't have any other TR's around me to hear to get a benchmark.

Thanks guys for any and all info

Try the Northeast section of the board, i'm sure there are a couple of guys around. Are you sure its not the injectors ticking? Could also be a leak. Do you have roller lifters?

Check your egr gasket i was getting a ticking sound put a new gasket and block off plate and it went away.

For one, there is no gasket on the two crossover pipe connections. Also, if you welded the headers yourself, or had someone do them for you, the flange may now be warped and leaking at the flange/head connection, that is if the cracks were welded up completely. It is not uncommon for the cracks to reappear also. It is accepted practice to drill small holes on the ends of the cracks in attempt to keep the cracks from reappearing/continuing. The header needs to be bolted to a junk head or a suitable surface before welding and shouldn't be removed until the header cools back down.

So...a leak at the crossover connection is not uncommon, especially if the crossover has been removed and not reseated properly. Also the connections can become "out of round" and will not seal up properly due to being warped. Some have had luck laying a thick bead of copper RTV, letting is set, then snugging the crossover back up.

Not the EGr, I have checked it and replaced the gasket and egr when i had the intake off. It is definitely the exhaust. When I welded the headers, I bolted the flange to a piece of steel in work, our machine shop, I am in the military, perks, ya!.

I did take a pretty good bead of copper rtv when I bolted the crossover back on, let it sit for 24 hours before starting it. But I think that is what it may be.

If you lay under the car with it running, and put your ear as close as heat allow, it sounds like it is coming from the x-over towards the passanger side. I may have to pull that crossover pipe out and see if i can see some carbon tracks or something.

Thanks for the tip on checking out the NE section too, never thought of that.

Also check the threads on the bolts.Mine were deteriorated from rust and I THOUGHT it was tight but in reality,it hit the spot were there weren't any threads and simply wouldn't budge, and was loose enuff to case a leak. Was more pronounced with the aftermarket x-over, the factory pipe was fine.
