I have never changed manual transmission fluid before...I have an 88' Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 w/ a 5-speed manual...

Now do I just undo the drain plug at the bottom of the cover...drain the fluid...put the drain plug back in...then undo the fill plug at the very top...fill with manual tranny fluid until it starts coming out at the top...then put the fill plug back in and be done???

Do manual trannys have filters in them? Would I have to undo the bottom cover and change the filter? I heard that most don't even have a filter...last question...which fluid do I use? I heard 75w90 or 80w90 regular GEAR oil???

Manual trannies do not have filters and they are changed just like a third member like you described.
Warning: they may use AUTOMATIC (ATF) tranny fluid NOT gear oil so check before filling. If it uses ATF then the tolerances will be to tight for thick gear oil to lubricate.
I don't think the fill plug is on top but it could be. Usually it has a plug on the side of the case that you fill up to just like the third member...

Somebody can correct me.

Be careful, as there is a plug on the drivers side that looks like a fill plug, but holds a pivot for shift fork linkage inside the case. Some of them are marked as such. If I rember correctly, fill plug is on passenger side. As far as fluid, I'd guess ATF also, but better to check your manual.

i don't have the manual...i will see which kind of fluid it takes...i'm not even sure which tranny i have...i looked on autozones website to check what kind of fluid i use and there's two different trannies for this truck...a mitsubitshi and mazda transmission? not sure which one i have!

What KEVINS said.

My aeroturd has a 3.0 with the mazda 5-speed.
Uses dextron autotrans fluid.
223,670 miles and still going strong:D

i'm pretty sure i have a mitsubitshi transmission which requires 80w90 gear oil...would it hurt if i did put ATF in there??? maybe i should just drain the fluid that is in there and make my decision there huh?

i just drained the fluid...it looks pretty nasty...it's definitely gear oil...it has that really nasty smell and it's really thick and like an orange/brown color...

the fill plug is actually on the driver SIDE of the tranny...kinda funny eh? guess i will just put good ol 80w90 gear oil back in there...
