my fan delay relay went south, these are NLA from GM or anybody for that matter,,how do you wire around it OR is their an alternative way to "replace" this relay.I have two cars that have this problem,so for the time being,I`ve got it wired to a toggle sw inside of car,so I can turn on fan at "will",I`m getting tired of this, anybody know how to eliminate this fan delay relay ?----thanks,,Jack

The easiest is to just unplug the relay.

You mean,if I unplug it,my fan will still work, just not the "delay" part ? At what temp is the fan supposed to come on ?-----thanks,Jack

The Delay relay doesn't effect normal fan operation. I don't know the fan on and off points programmed in the Extender chip.

Then if the fan will operate ok w/o the delay relay, and my eng temp was 230 and NO fan operation, then I`d better look at the fan sw in the intake manif, probly bad,,that explains it all. I thought that the fan wouldnt work if the delay rely was bad,,thanks for the info,,,Jack

If the temp was 230 and the fan isn't on, then 2 circuits have failed.
The chip/ecm should turn on low fan at the programmed temp (typically ~170 for aftermarket chips).
The switch on top of the intake should activate high relay, not sure of the temp, but ~210.
Try turning on the AC. This is the last event that will make the fan turn on - high.
Are you sure the fan itself is still good?

The two smaller relays in front of the big fan delay relay are the high speed and low speed relays, I forget the order but it doesn't matter for testing.

To test them turn the IGN key to the ON position.

Then take a metal pin or needle and push it into the dark green or the dark green with yellow stripe wires on the relays, they are the smaller gauge wires on the connector.

Touch a grounded wire onto the pin and you should get low or high speed operation when each of the relays kicks in that you are testing.

An alternative test is to slightly slide the connector down on the relay so it still makes contact with the tabs on the relay and touch the grounded wire to the tab on the relay that goes to the dark green or dark green with yellow stripe wire.

fan delay relay--

I`ve ran the fan with a jumper, worked fine-----I didnt know all the "how it works in sequence",but now with that info I`ll be able to trace this down,,thanks for all the input guys,it really makes a difference with all this know-how on these boards----thanks,,Jack

Obviously the RLYS fuse must be good first for testing.

If they don't turn on when you ground the green or green with yellow stripe wires try gently tapping the top of the relay with the butt end of a screwdriver.

If they kick in and work for even a second or two, or stay on, the relay is intermittant with most likely worn out contacts and should be replaced ASAP.

Had two bad relays on a southern GN I bought used, just worn out from normal use.
