had my engine rebuild.tried to start it up and it took a while,
canks normal for about 4 turns then it slows down.
after about 30 sec. it started up,i broke in the cam then i lowered
the rpms and it had a very rough idle.i had the cam sensor set with the direction from gnttpye.org.but im not sure if im missing something else.went through averything twice to make sure.
any comments?

Could just be bad gas. Get a new set of plug wires. The good ones, magnacore. I hear red armstrong has the best.

Get a noid light, and be sure all the injectors are pulsing.

Put a 3" piece of plastic tubing on a plug at the coil pack. Attach the plug wire to the other end. You can observe the spark this way, since the electric ignition on these cars fires backwards as well. Look for a good blue spark. Yellow is bad, and could indicate a bad plug wire, or ignition module.

Good luck!

Make sure cam sensor was put in on the compression stroke and not the exhaust stroke (like I did). It will cause this.

Paul makes a good point. When I got my present engine together, and fired it up for the cam break-in (which went well).
Then after the break in, the car ran kinda crappy, rough idle, off idle stumble, etc.

Come to find out, I had the cam sensor 180 out. Had it set up on the "wrong" TDC.

That means the car was running on the exhaust stroke spark! I know exactly how this is...

Had this happen to me when a bad instruction set had the coil terminal numbers reveresed for a typeII ignition upgrade. When I was taking it back off to put the stock module back on, I noticed the very small numbers showing the correct terminal numbers. Switched the wires around and it ran fine.

This leads me to believe that if anyone suspects a 180 out cam sensor, you can just switch the spark plug wire pairs at each coil. If it runs better when you do this, you can put the wires back on correctly and rotate the cam sensor!

Anyone see a problem with this as being a quick check? I see this cam sensor issue quite a lot on the board, and this would be a nice quick way to isolate the problem.

Glad to figured it out, though! Nice work.

exactly how should i rotate it 180*
by taking it out an turn it. or just turn it while its in.
the voltmeter reads around 14v and i turned it back it droped to about 9v.
like you guys said maybe its on the wrong stroke.how would i find the right stroke?
and does the break in lube burns smoke out the tailppe ?
and for how long?
had a little smoke from engine area too,i think its the
sealent that was put on the gaskets.

i also suspect a leak on the oil pump housing where
the gasket is(or sealant).
