took my 87 GN to the track today. it was the first time i have ever ran a car down the 1/4. the car is bone stock and does not have a posi. just wanted to see if this is a descent time for a posi-less stock GN at a 5000 ft plus altitude.

R/t .372 ;)
60' 2.454
330 6.390
1/8 9.62
1/4 14.80
MPH 94.01

modifications will hopefully begin soon. i also tried out a hypertech chip at the track just to see what would happen. it didnt help at all. with that chip i ran a 14.84.

Get a scanmaster and I will let you use the Reds 93 chip next time.

I was running FPR at 47 last night down the track, and changed to 43 today (didn't think to check fuel press) and it was running a lot better. Maybe with valve springs we can get into low 13s next time :P

did you take your car to the track again?
with posi and springs i can probably do a 14.0. dont think i can dip into the 13's without a dual solenoid for my ramchargers boost controller.

For what it's worth, I had an 86 T-Top (heavy) GN with a "peg-leg", and it went a best of 13.52 @ 102mph in Dallas, which is probably not more than 1000 ft. above sea level. All it had was a K&N, adjustable wastegate (bleed valve), ATR Pitbull chip, and factory stock exhaust with the muffler removed, and McCreary dirt track tires on the rear for a little traction.

The car had a Hypertech chip when I bought it, and it was a worthless chip! One of the worst on the market in that day. This was back in 1995 though.

I've seen other people on the board running 12's with a peg-leg, so you've got room to grow. However, you'd do yourself well to locate a used differential with a posi.

I always found it amusing that any of these cars were sold w/o a posi, yet, it was optional on the purchase list...

The hypertech is worthless but I thought it would be better then the stock chip at least.

I went to the track again but didn't race, I just talked to a few people and someone mentioned fuel pressure, and I forgot to even check it when I changed chips.

I wouldn't even mess with boost control without a scanmaster. I ran a mid 13 on stock boost on the low timing thrasher chip.

would it be better to just install a posi into my current differential?

Sure it would, if you can do it yourself, or know a reputable shop you trust to do it.
However, if you go that route, I would suggest getting the Eaton unit, as opposed to the Auburn. The Eaton is rebuildable, and I personally believe to be a better overall choice. The Auburn is a "use it, break it, chunk it" unit, so if you plan on keeping the car a while, I'd stick with the factory style Eaton.

I would imagine some of the Buick Vendors on this board would sell the unit.

much better than my first time at the track. i turned an impressive 16.slow at slow mph. I personally wouldn't put any money into it (aside from a posi and a scan tool) untill your in the 13's. I made that mistake. I have a car that should run mid-high 12's that didn't make it past a 14.2 @102 last year.

theres a lot of stuff to check, i couldnt' go into all of it right now. go to gnttype.org and do everything on the spring cleaning list.

and listen to what other peopel down there are saying. i know theres a lot of fast guys down by you.

already performed the spring cleaning and last year i had to get a few other things replaced and fixed. ignition module, crank sensor, cracked drivers side exhaust manifold, u joints and a few other little things to get it too runperfect. now thats it has an OK 1/4 time for having an open rear end i can order some parts for it. ive got an accufab regulator, racetronix fuel pump kit, reds 93 chip on the way. i already have the duttweiler neck and BSTC on it right now with a bunch of digital gauges inside.

denn454. how often do you take your car to Bandimere? or maybe even PMI?

last year i was going to bandimere almost every week for wed. night test and tune, along with al te club clash events and high school drags.

I haven't been to pmi since i was probably 13 racing jr dragsters. I'm going to go to the buick day they have down there this year, as long as i don't get stuck working.

I'm not sure where to get them this year, but last year i was getting free passes from sun honda for wed. night. I bet you can get something from the state partoll this year since there doing the alive at 25 thing.

ill try and find some more info on the free passes from the fuzz ;)
how many buicks have you seen attend bandimere. i love GN's but i really wanna go to bandimere to see some of the high horsepower supras. if i had the money i would have my GN along with a supra. the GN would be built to be faster of course :D

I'm friends with Jay who runs the pmi track, i'll see if I can score a few.

It's cheap anyways, $3 to get in and $10 to race. Not sure about the new street night, but I think i'll have more fun at those beating all the "street" cars then the regular friday drags.

your mailboxes on here and emai are always full so i will just send you messages on threads :D
what do you think about the RJC power plate? i just ordered one. should be here in a couple days

theres the buick guys, a bunch of beer loving loonies, but good guys. I don't think there members here. theres 3 of them, i think they only have 2 cars, one made it into the 10's and the other one is very close. I do know they have a high mileage car too that they say runs 12's, but i've never seen it there.

aside from that i'd guess theres 4-5 others. I saw a very very nice dark grey one there once. an 84-85 gn. and 86 i talked to the guy but didn't get or don't remember his name, he was only there once or twice. I know there are a few guys here that i've never met.

I was ging to go up today for their first tech and test, but thanks to the snow i'm setting here, rather than racing. I'll probably go up to their first wed. night test. I cant' wait!

OH, does anyone know if i can get a bandimere number there at any time so i don't have to go through tech every time? I have the application but its not very clear.

I have one of those also, but i'm waiting for new plenum and all that to be installed.

I'm going to do downpipe, plenum, powerplate, and maybe new injectors all at once. I'm getting a percision plenum anyways so I need the special powerplate. The powerplate is good, but don't "add" power. It just makes sure you dont blow a headgasket with too high off boost and leaning out.
